?????????????????????

If you were wondering what the Angels' final album has to do with hot rods and surfing, allow me to explain: Firstly the album has a great lost surf number, "(You Can't Take) My Boyfriend's Woody" as well as a perfectly infecious version of "Louie Louie" which was quite a staple in live perfomances of most surf acts. Secondly, it also possess a rare Jan Berry-Art Kornfeild composition/production, "I Adore Him" which, in my opinion, is enough in itself to warrent a place in any collection. While most other girl groups of the time sang sweetly over percussive instrumentation, the Angels were defined by performing heavier instrumentation under edgier (and sometimes just plain shredding) vocals; just listen to the last :30 of "My Boyfreind's Back" or "Wow-wow-ee". While not necessarily a bonafide 'surf group', the trio did record one surf and hot rod number which was included on their final album, A Halo To You.

The album begins with a spoken word intro into "Wow, Wow, Wee" much in the same vain as "My Boyfreind's Back", which is a great brass-laden number in the iconic girl group style. "Java" is an updated version of Al Hirt's signature tune sung with a 1950's scat approach. Released amid the height of Beatlemania, A Halo To You also features a rather lackluster Beatle number, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" which may be of interest for Fab Four fans. Surprisingly one of the best tracks on the album is a wild version of "Louie Louie" in which the girls even duplicate to the Kingsmen's (now iconic) false re-entry after the instrumental break. The album's only surf-related track, "(You Can't Take) My Boyfreind's Woody" is a fantastic lost artifact of the genre which could've easily been a Honeys release. "(He Is) The Kissing Kind" is a bouncy vocal-shredding track which should've warranted a single release. Side two opens up with with a Jan Berry written and produced "I Adore Him" which is lushly produced and features an opening riff that would later be recycled into Jan and Dean's "I Found A Girl". "Little Beatle Boy" is a sappy love-letter to the British foursome which probably would've been addressed to the five boys from Hawthorne if it had been released the previous year. "Snowflakes and Teardrops" shows a more tender side of the band. Similarly, both "Guess the Boy Don't Love Me Anymore" "By the Time You Read this Letter" shows that the group was fully capable of imitating the cookie-cutter girl group image. After four mellower songs, the sleepy "Dream Boy" features an heavy fuzz guitar solo (something that wouldn't become popularin love ballads until the '70s) closing out the album on a much different note than what it started on.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole punched IN THE LABEL AREA. This affects the record, which also has a small cutout hole in the label area.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2. (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners and a smaller one in another

-        Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles (tiny, faint, droplet-like water stains) scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting) (less than 1 square inch in size, total)

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) pressure stamp on the back panel (BARELY VISIBLE, has to be viewed under certain angle to notice)

-        Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
