Description
This is a fine copy from a 1975 reissue (the Jacksonville pressing per the runout matrix numbers) of the landmark debut LP by Canadian transplants the Band, originally released in 1968. The group started life as the Hawks backing Toronto-based singer Ronnie Hawkins, and soon after became Bob Dylan's backing band when he went electric. Their debut LP grew out of informal recordings they made with Dylan in 1967 in upstate New York, which also spawned Dylan's Basement Tapes LP. Its best known track is probably "The Weight," but it features several other originals as well as a cover of "Long Black Veil" and three tracks either written or co-written by Dylan, including the album's closer, "I Shall Be Released." The record's rootsy and somewhat melancholy vibe was out of step with most of the rock albums released in this tumultuous year, but it anticipated the grittier sounds that would dominate rock music only a couple of years later. The gatefold jacket is close to M- with light ring wear, scuffing, and wear along the spine and seams (EX+). The disc is clean with a few superficial dings and a little light scuffing, and plays with some light crackling in one spot on side 2, and otherwise with some light surface noise (EX).
I am in the process of selling off a large personal collection amassed over two decades. All discs have been stored in plastic lined inner sleeves separate from their jackets. The jackets have been stored in plastic sleeves. I have play graded (spot checked) discs except where otherwise noted.
