The former Bob Dylan backing band that ushered in the roots rock of the '70s, embodying Americana in a way that no one else has approached.

For roughly half a decade, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world. With their first release "Music From Big Pink" the Band became one of the most talked about phenomenon and critically praised group in rock music, their initial albums and music as analyzed and reviewed as seriously as The Beatles or Bob Dylan.

With this, their 2nd album, steeped in Mythic Americana imagery, their reputation exploded -and they were embraced wholeheartedly by the public at large for their warm, rootsy, down home, backwoods blend of rock, gospel, country and blues brought together in a way that hadn't ever been heard. All of this without losing a bit of their integrity, critical acclaim or focused brilliance.

Moreover, here they climbed out of the shadow of Bob Dylan with strong, compelling songwriting of their own that was every bit a match for anything he was releasing at the time. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Rag Mama Rag", "Jemima Surrender" and "Up On Cripple Creek" all became classics that defined the upcoming roots rock scene in American rock that quickly grew in the wake of this album.

And it all sounded so effortless, natural and real here; as complete in its whole as it was miraculous in its parts -each member adding so much to the sound that with any one of them missing, this couldn't ever have happened.
