Description
This is a beautiful copy of the very first single by the Beach Boys: "Surfin'" b/w "Luau" (Candix 331). Released December 8, 1961. Matrix # CD-TS-1 is imprinted on the inner groove of side 1, and CD-TS-2 on side 2. CD stands for Candix Records, TS stands for The Surfers (the name Candix gave to the group), the numbers 1 and 2 stand for the record side. Though arguably not the rarest issue, 331 is first issue of this single. Subsequent issues, X 301, Candix 301, and Candix 301 with "Dist. by ERA Record Sales," all have an "R" in the matrix number (which stands for "reissue"). For decades it was thought that 331 was the third and final issue of this single. Research shows that 331 was the number given to the very first pressing. Subsequent issues on the Candix label were changed to 301 in order to match the X label number. This information has been gathered from the Stephen MacPharland's book Our Favorite Recording Sessions.
This is the finest copy I've ever seen. The labels have no writing, stickers, or tears. Striking colors in the lettering of the label logo, not much fading at all. Only some very minor wear around the edges.
Vinyl is exceptionally glossy, with very few very light paper scuffs. Surely the finest condition that's been up for auction in a long time.
