Label/Format: Capitol, original rainbow rim format with matt textured surfaces. Side two has the rare single embossed ‘J’ tax code and is unworn.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with just one or two ultra fine and faint spindle taces and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, mono copies are less easy to find in better conditions. This a beautiful copy avoiding the traumas so many mono records often suffer and it plays very impressively, it appears hardly played and few mono originals will be seen better.

Brief Info: Album 13 for the famed and popular American band. This offered a slightly different sound to their brand of music. Issued to mixed reviews and it did not initially sell as well as would have been expected in the United States – it actually fared better here in the UK. Originals in mono that appear hardly played and offer beautiful clean sound with a gorgeous fresh shiny cover are elusive and seldom surface. One for fans of the legendary band and a great opportunity.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod and Lofthouse with ‘Patents Pending’ text. This the correct ‘T’ mono cover to match the record. Includes the EMI black and white promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Superb colourful artwork seen to maximum advantage with no lifting and deep glossy shine retained. Only a tiny few very fine edge hairline creases and barely any dulling, even under light. The freshness and vivid colour of the graphic are simply gorgeous and seldom survive like this.

Cover Back: Any darkening of the white card is very light indeed, the odd gentle scuff trace only, but no creasing with the graphics unrubbed. All three flipbacks are superb, solid and clean, the ends with no grime lines or burring. So a very fine back to match the amazing looking front.

Top Edge: Smoothly laminated with no scuffs or wear at all, slight bowing towards the right being critical.

Bottom Edge: Simply immacule as-made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with any thickening light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, very gently bowed with minimal compression, the ends are very gently nipped in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. The white surface hardly darkened at all, fresh and clear.

Corners: All corners are barely worn at all with better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong and highly attractive all-round example of this vintage 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a superb example of this black and white 1966 unlined promotional inner sleeve. This has hardly aged or creased at all, the lack of darkening, creasing or marks to the surfaces is rarely seen on these vintage inners. All edges strongly and naturally intact with no repairs. Among those promoted is The Beach Boys classic ‘Pet Sounds’.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better still for a mono record into its 52nd year. A superb visual copy that is clean with lovely shine and heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces ultra fine, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light – hardly any – few classic mono albums will surface with fewer visual blemishes than this. Viewed in average room light, this comes very close to reminding of new. Visually an amazing record that should please many, if not most collectors again

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Beach Boys album plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played only once or twice prior to my mandatory sound check and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this vintage mono classic. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
