Label Conditions: All four are immaculate, very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. As seen, two have Factory Sample stickers on them, both in the same ultra fresh and clean conditions as the labels and records.

Brief Info: A magnificent double set, known as ‘The Red’ album, a collection of singles, several of which that did not appear on original albums, plus selected album tracks. Issued as a companion set to the blue album 1967–1970 (also on offer). This one peaked at No 3 in the UK album charts, the blue album one place higher at No 2. All songs classics that most will be more than familiar with. A fantastic pair of records appearing hardly played with beautiful pristine sound throughout. Factory samples are rare and elusive, but nothing more important than audio quality, these vintage gems all sound amazing without any digital tweaking or remastering of course. ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘She Loves You’ include the fake stereo mix that was later changed back to mono on the CD reissues from the 1990s and beyond.

Cover Grade and Format: The back top left corner tip has a tiny tear and lost, so putting a definitive grade on this is less easy. So I will grade this EXCELLENT(++), but with a small corner flaw, you decide how much this degrades because any opinion is purely subjective. It has little else to fault and still remains in superb condition. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated, the inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the two red lyric inner sleeves.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate both sides retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and barely any trace of dulling, even under light. As stated, the only blemish on this age-defying cover is the small tip tear on the back top left, that apart, it’s little short of immaculate. The lack of creasing is almost astonishing for a popular album cover this considerable age, I can see none at all on the front, even edge hairlines avoided, and only three of those on the back spine. Any marks or laminate blemishes very few, gentle and faint, barely any in fact. Even with the small flaw on the back tip, this is still one of the finest and least aged I have seen in years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The tiny tip issue apart – this less evident inside – both faces are near perfect. The laminate ends on the bottom edges, and this has not stuck or pulled.

Top Edges: Mostly straight and neat without wear bar the tip flaw.

Bottom Edges: Mostly straight again without any wear worthy of mention.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Records enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Immaculate and retaining full laminate, this often flakes and peels on gatefolds, this is as fresh, clear and solid as when issued. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Any central crease formation from opening minuscule. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Yes the back spine top tip is torn, also a tiny trace on the very tip (of the tip) of the front. All others are superb with lovely crisp shape and with hardly any wear.

Cover Summary: With the relatively small tip flaws, not for the connoisseur cover purists. But with all else in superb condition, this should still please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: Both NEAR MINT: these unlined shaped corner lyric inners are immensely difficult to find in this fantastic condition, both look practically as-made without edge splits or repairs. All surfaces ultra clean and deep red with no ring wear, fading or creasing, any rim impression gentle and faint. Both the deeply recessed top openings are little short of immaculate, any thickening to the thin card end bordering on minuscule. So many seen torn and split, these could as close to as-new you will see.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+)/(++): a very fine visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. These appear hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. All four sides plays beautifully. Visually a super records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent compilation plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything noted at all, both records pressed to the highest standard with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform these significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain they have hardly been used and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. I do not know the history the cover blemish, but for sure the records are gorgeous. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these exceptionally well preserved records. They will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
