Vinyl Type: This one of the rarer examples pressed on spectacular blue translucent vinyl. The cover also includes the original promotional large sticker (as seen in close-up). These were more limited.

Label/Format: Apple – one record they are smooth finished, the other are both quite heavily textured. These two records do appear different, inasmuch the matrixes are different as are the label finishes. Both (for sure) made in England but by different pressing plants. So an interesting pair for The Beatles specialist collector (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: All four very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two very light and very faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: PCSP 718.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 126 / 140 grams. The textured label second disc being heavier. This one having the look and feel of those early heavy Island textured labelled records.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarcer on blue vinyl and still having the cover sticker. I feel this could be quite rare having two distinctly different pressing plant records inside. Lastly, this includes two superb matching inner sleeves that have avoided splits (with NO tape)

Brief Info: An album that needs little explanation, other than the fact it is pressed on spectacular blue vinyl and unusually, is pressed by two clearly different UK manufacturers. The songs, all classics, will be more than familiar to any interested collector. Issued in 1973 and it appears hardly even played, the cover includes the large promotional sticker and two of hte finest inner sleeves I have ever seen for this set.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format with laminate front and back. This covers all the closed edges and ends inside the centre on the bottom edges. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the huge promotional ‘Blue Vinyl’ sticker as seen in close-up. Both the inners are included.

Cover Laminate – Front & Back: Both sides have very clean, fresh, shiny and clear laminate with barely even a hint of any dulling. Practically all is solidly adhered with just a tiny lift near the back top right corner and any creasing, very few and faint. A couple of tiny crinkles on the back entrace edge, but little else. The huge promotional blue vinyl sticker is impressive as well, clearly never removed with just a tiny scuff trace near the 12 o’clock position – few will be found a great clear or fresh looking. This is one of the best complete examples I have seen for many years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This is near perfect, barely aged and clean. Also this one has the quite wide laminate ends on the bottom edges, both remain unpulled with no sticking damage.

Top Edges: Both straight with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: As above, even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any burring or thickening minimal, both are guaranteed untrimmed. A very small dink or crease just above centre quite gently evident on the back, even less so via the front. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression quite gentle and light. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is near perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. A light central natural crease from opening is near impossible to avoid, here very light indeed and this has not caused any issues with the laminate so can peel if excessively opened over time.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint and all retain excellent or better shape with any tip creases tiny and light.

Cover Summary: Now into it’s 40th year and looking almost as impressive as when issued, this very fresh example should please many, if not most collectors. The small, minor opening edge blemishes the only factor for the highly discerning.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(++): these are heavily prone to edge splits and many were so when bought due to movement to the retailer. These two are a perfect matching pair with the same shaped corner angle cuts and beautifully shaped and recessed top openings. They were both manufactured in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and are of the same colour shade – these can and often do vary. These have remained fresh and clean with barely any creasing and no ring wear. Both top openings are very neat and crisp with any hint of thickening to the very ends being very slight indeed. All the edges appear unsplit with no repairs, but the very centre of the bottom on each has thinned a little from rim pressure. So many of these were taped to reinforce them or simply repair previous splits. A rare pair that have avoided any – the aforementioned bottom centre of each have a very small and one tiny rub that has left a minor white, but I am pretty sure, no actual split – if there is, it is beyond tiny. The left and right edges on both are pristine with no movement thinning or even rubbing. Printed both sides with all the song lyrics and both these incredibly fragile inners are exceptional and will prove incredibly hard to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): or better, this allowing for one small mark on side four that emits half a dozen light clicks on ‘Something’, the only small blemish of note on the entire set which plays with fantastic sound. A superb visual pair that are very clean, shiny and very solidly pressed on spectacular blue translucent vinyl. Translucent means light will pass through the record. A pair hardly even played on all the evidence. Visually super records that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records mostly play even above their high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range an bar the aforementioned brief, light clicks on ‘Something’ and offer very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or other noteworthy clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. A set, when found, so often played heavily – and why not? I have found coloured vinyl, in most cases, sounds as good as black – only picture discs (in most cases) have considerably inferior sound and both these blue cuts sound fantastic. Few copies will outperform this rarer and collectable pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly well stored and generally, carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing (the half dozen or so brief clicks apart) spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these wonderful records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
