Label/Format: Parlophone – original ‘first’ press format with matt, smooth surfaces. Side one has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both little short of pristine. This includes the ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ rim text and ‘Sold in the UK…’ text as seen on my label pictures.

Label Conditions: Both in exceptional conditions, like many Beatles albums, this often took heavy usage and abuse on the most basic of record players with the usual disastrous results for audio quality. These first format labels are both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Amongst the least I have seen on a vintage Beatles album in fact, most are seen played to destruction. A lovely early copy that will please many collectors.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams. A typical heavyweight Parlophone record from this era of quality.

Rarity: As I always state, for the vast majority of Beatles records, few are rare, or even remotely so, most all sold in vast numbers, especially in mono until ‘Sgt Pepper’. The most important factor bar none is condition, with the majority played heavily, and often now rendered unlistenable on modern-day hi-fi systems. Ones appearing hardly played and offering lovely clean sound quality are at far more of a premium. This album arguably, that included all those early hits, some songs not even available on the regular long-players, receiving even more usage than others. I have never found this an easy one to find lightly played as per this. Even the most challenging and difficult songs including ‘Michelle’ and ‘Yesterday’ play very impressively with hardly anything unwanted. All the tracks focused, clear and precise without crackle, pops and clicks – such copies are MUCH harder to find, especially with neat clean, little worn or aged cover. Indeed this copy could prove a significant upgrade for some, and I will never offer any Beatles album that fails to hit the mark. Worn-out and heavily used copies are common enough – clean, hardly played copies are a MUCH different matter.

Brief Info: No long histrionics needed for this one: the title speaks for itself. So briefly: a compilation of the early hits issued for the Christmas 1966 market. It did include a ‘new’ song for the UK market with ‘Bad Boy’ that was issued in the United States in 1965. An important factor, and somewhat strangely, this album has never officially been issued on CD – even in recent box sets. So it remains unique to vinyl, with the superb cover, that is a real surprise. A difficult album to find in really fine condition, this one is a impressive and appears very little played. One that proved highly enjoyable on play-grade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends atop three rear external flipbacks. This the correct PMC mono cover as seen. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and included the ‘Patents pending’ cover. The plain white inner sleeve is also included.

Lamination & Front: Stunning artwork, and this cover does it near maximum justice. The beautiful vivid and fresh graphic looks hugely impressive under clear, fresh and shiny laminate that has minimal creasing and no lifting. Few marks and even under angled light, barely any dulling or friction rubs. This has aged little with barely any hint of toning or discolouration. An lovely looking front to say the very least.

Cover Back: The more vulnerable back is also very nice. It has a very small tone spot near the bottom of the left edge as seen and a little gentle creasing to the laminate on the flipbacks that few will ever avoid totally. The unprotected back panel is generally clean and still fresh without rubbing or creasing with only minor hints of ‘wear’ on the left opening – this being very critical for a popular album cover fast approaching 50. All flipbacks are sound and quite neat: minor burr traces to the ends here and there, but no damage, and even the ends lack the usual grime most seem to acquire. So a very fine back to complement the very attractive front.

Top Edge: Unworn, smooth and still quite straight.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same and even straighter.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with little wear. A little thickening and gentle burring as seen more viewed end-on. But this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the record enters on this edge vulnerable edge.

Spine and Text: A superb, barely worn spine: solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends are gently pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, being critical, centred a fraction high when made.

Corners: All retain superb excellent or better shape with barely any wear again.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic 1960s cover – one still unique to vinyl, it will prove difficult to find much better. With fantastic artwork, this beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a typical plain white unlined inner common to EMI-pressed records at this time. Gently aged with minor and small tone spots, but barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This includes the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very fine, whispy light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. NO penentrating stylus marks at all, few very popular mono records will be found a great deal better. Simply compare to most seen these days – chalk and cheese – this record is lovely. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sublime album includes all the early classics, it plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything of note to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The odd trace between a song or two, but how many of these will not have that as the barest minimum? With so many played to destruction and still being offered, I will never buy, let alone offer such copies. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp without single channel noises, even played on a critically revealing LP12 stereo turntable, for which this record was never really designed. I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. For me, the best way to enjoy these vintage singles, better than old crackly, scratched and worn-out 45s. I am NOT saying this is a copy for perfectionists, and even though this is hardly ‘rare’, it could still prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
