The Beatles : A Hard Day's Night 1964 (1st Mono Presssing)
This first mono pressing plays with stunning audio, I have never heard better. One thing I have noticed which may be of interest to Beatles collectors is that this first pressing has an MT tax stamp on the S2 label not the more commonly seen KT stamp. MT was used on records manufactured between Jan 1st and June 30th 1963 and this album was obviously released in 1964. On the beatles-collection.com site they do say anomalies exist but not many I imagine.
Mono 3N/3N first pressing on Yellow/Black label. 'The Parlophone Co. Ltd' etc printed around the perimeter edge - this denotes it as a genuine first press.

The audio on S1 is Near Mint ('Tell Me Why' and 'Can't Buy Me Love' are Ex / Ex+)

S1 is immaculate with an incredible glossy sheen and looks almost as new. There are a couple of tiny marks but they have no affect on the audio at all. There is also only 2/3 very faint wispy spindle lines so it is obvious this vinyl has only been lightly played. S2 does have one longer thin hairline but again has no affect the stunning quality of the audio. Other than that it is visually immaculate and again has a lovely glossy sheen I have never seen a cleaner, more impressive looking first press. There is a little more spindle wear on this side but again does not appear to have been played that much. The rare MT tax stamp is on the S2 label.
Play grading
There is only minimal lead in static and then 'A Hard Day's Night' plays with stunning clarity and depth and no interference whatsoever. I have listened to every second of this iconic album and I am pleased to report this wonderful standard is maintained throughout side One. 'If I Fell' and 'And I Love Her' are classic example of this. For relatively quiet tracks they both play with such definition and clarity it is incredible to think this vinyl is 53 years old. 'Tell Me Why' and 'Can't Buy Me Love' do play with a little distortion but this may be due to being played through a stereo system. This can sometimes cause a small deterioration in audio quality. There is no static or crackle and no clicks or pops at all. How rare is that?! There is also complete silence between every track accept after the first track where there is a little background static.S2 more than equals the standard set on S1. The warmth and depth of the sound is again breathtaking. 'Any Time At All' plays so clearly for a 'louder' track and there is no distortion/fuzzing at all. I cannot stress just how good the audio quality is here! The sonic quality across the whole side is just so good you would think this vinyl was pressed only recently. 'Things We Said Today' is another fine example of the Near Mint quality on offer. I heard only one dust tick, the clarity is again stunning. The final three tracks have a little distortion here and there and yet still play extremely well with no other interference.
In summary this is without doubt the cleanest first mono pressing I have heard. Yes I keep on about clarity but here it is worth repeating! The warmth and richness of the sound is first class and for a first press to have no crackle, clicks or pops is very rare today.
Cover
The G & L laminated flipback cover has some minor wear but nothing what I would call excessive and is certainly better than so many you see today. The edges and spine are very clean with hardly any rubbing except for a couple of tiny marks on the bottom edge. The corners do have some wear but again is not major. The opening edge has a little handling wear but again is not excessive. The laminated front cover remains in excellent shape with no splits or lifting just some small creases around the edges. The back cover has a couple of print marks and some age related fading but overall it is relatively clean and has no writing on it. The flipbacks are in excellent condition with only light marking here and there, no bad staining which is very common.
Inner sleeve
The original poly-lined 'Emitex' sleeve has a couple of splits, a small one at the bottom and a larger one to the side. It also has some creasing which is to be expected. There is no writing or marking though.
Labels
The labels are in superb condition with no writing or marking and only a little spindle wear. As stated it has the rare MT tax stamp on the S2 label.
