Label/Format: Apple – with matt surfaces that have a very gentle trace of texturing, this one includes the song title ‘Her Majesty’ as can be seen on my picture.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive, very gentle dull spotting traces seen on side two right up close. Only under angled light do a very small few light, fine and faint spindle traces show. Hardly the rarest record I have ever offered, but one of the finest, this copy appears hardly played, that for this incredibly popular album, is quite Something.

Rarity: Moderate: a huge seller of course. Conditions are always the prime factor, and this one is really lovely and plays superbly with little unwanted – that is so often not the case. A mass produced record and often subjected to heavy usage and wear, this appears little used. A lovely deeply coloured cover, the classic artwork looks fantastic. Even the soft paper black inner is impressive and UNSPLIT (with NO repairs).

Brief Info: The penulimate eleventh Beatles album and a masterpiece that most-all will know more than well. A huge selling album and one of the nation’s favourites, this is a national treasure. That said, finding clean early copies is far from easy these days, so many let down by surface noise, scratches and often considerable (careless) usage on the most basic of record players. This is a really nice clean all-round example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single fully laminated format. No ‘Her Majesty’ listed. This has the standard, correctly aligned Apple logo and the very thin early spine. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse International Ltd. This copy includes the black one window hole, soft paper black inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: One of the most famous covers in the history of popular music, and this is an impressive example that can be enjoyed almost to the maximum. Even though fully laminated, these often fail to wear well and so many seen are tired and aged, often badly dulled, creased with major laminate issues. This retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with barely any lifting – tiny traces on the back centre purely in manufacture – this only seen with scrutiny under light and very small. Any dulling light, again under light, a little is seen around the rim area, but remains virtually inconspicuous with normal full-on viewing. The lack of creasing is a major plus – yes a few hairline types on the edges that are near impossible to avoid totally – but away from the sides, there are barely any – one tiny gentle half moon on the front that registers little. What makes this one especially attractive is the rich deep colour of the famous picture, this is not washed out or faded on any area and is a delight to hold and enjoy.

Top & Bottom Edges: All the edges on this early cover very thin, hence delicate, but all in superb condition. Both and top and bottom edges are straight, smooth and unworn, very impressive indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, largely sharp with any thickening or burring gentle and lights as viewed end-on. Also viewing like that, is when the thinness of card is made clear: to keep this popular, and usually well-handled cover in this type of condition over such a long period, takes considerable care and dedication. The record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The fine unprotected laminate end-lines and exposed strips (one on the front right, three on the back) show barely any wear at all.

Spine and Text: Little short of immaculate and even this has superb shine. Solid, but again, incredibly thin as seen on my picture. Still smooth, unworn or scuffed, also very straight without the usual bowing. The ends are deeply pinched in manufacture. All text pristine perfect under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has just one fine hairline. For good measure, close to perfectly centred on such a narrow depth. Any compression minimal, a fragile spine that has fared very well.

Corners: Any tip rubbing minimal and tiny, excellent shape retained with no bashes or evidence of dinking.

Cover Summary: One to hold and admire – as stated, hardly the rarest cover in the world – but few available ones with the deepest colour, thinnest card and barely any wear are much harder to find. A superb all-round example of this most famous cover with its iconic artwork. The subject of much debate and a favourite for pub quizzers for which I have used many times. A tip for any quizzer to remember the order – HMS Lennon – easy. A no frills standard early-made example with high upgrade potential, this beauty should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, as this is very difficult to to find with no damaged and all edges unsplit or repaired. This being the somewhat specialised typical Apple black unlined inner made with soft paper that tears, creases and even goes woolly on the edges if rubbed even lightly. This has one open window circle, they were not lined, hence the edges are very vulnerable. All here are unsplit or repaired, the window is pristine and there is hardly any creasing. Quite honestly, these are rarely seen like this or better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): very clean with excellent shine and solidly pressed. Any surfaces traces are very fine, wispy and faint as seen very critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus scratches and this is a lovely fine record, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. With so many of these and similar Beatles albums played to near destruction and heavily marked and dulled, this puts a copy like this into true perspective. It plays as impressive as it looks also, not quite for those who want as brand new – and good luck finding those – but many, if not most collectors will enjoy this one.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This evergreen Beatles classic plays mostly even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, also, as you will expect, beautifully produced. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd trace almost impossible to avoid, especially when played on such clinical and revealing equipment, and there are no tracking issues*. The production, detail and sonic delivery of the music never fails to impress on really clean examples. An album that offers very quiet acoustic songs and also some heavier material – the warmth and detail from these early records is beautiful. And that is why the audiophile listeners spend vast sums on quality hi-fi, to glean every detail, not matter how tiny for maximum audio pleasure. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – such clean copies are considerably harder to find than you may think. And very special albums deserve the finest copies.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
