Famed textured 'Butcher Cover' - 3rd State peeled.

"Yesterday and Today" was released with two different covers. One has the Beatles posed around a trunk, the other has the Beatles wearing butchers' smocks with chunks of raw meat and doll parts as props. This cover, in 1966, was shocking and distasteful to Capitol Records executives in the US and the "Butcher Covers" were recalled, immediately upon release. New jackets were needed quickly and thus were simply pasted over the old ones and shipped to stores. Some were never pasted over, and are today referred to as a first-state "Butcher Cover". A second-state cover is one that has been pasted over, but left as-is with no attempt to peel off the new 'Trunk' cover to reveal the original 'Butcher' cover underneath. A third-state cover has the paste-over removed, usually by using a solvent to soften the glue, and carefully peeling the 'Trunk' cover off. The code-number 6 in the lower right corner of the back cover of this item indicates that it was manufactured in Los Angeles, California, and therefore an alcohol soluable glue was used. I am guessing that isopropyl alchohol was used to perform the peel.

Too much alcohol can leave the cover with a pink tint, but this jacket has a very nicely done peel job. There is just a little white residue remaining only on John's chin & Paul's right knee, which could probably be removed if desired. BUT - why bother? It would be best to leave this 'as is', due to the crazy doodling in blue ball-point ink pen. On the top border is the name Mark. Below that is the name Frankie Armondo in a box. To the left is a heart with the names Mae & Frankie within. There are some scribbles on John's arm, and he has been given a fumanchu style mustache. Paul has been given round glasses & a mustache. Ringo got the full treatment with some scribbles in his lap as well as a beard, mustache & glasses, while George gets off unscathed! The story I got from the fellow I'm selling this for, is that in 1969, after dad peeled it, his teenage daughter did some doodling while talking on the phone.

There is also some paper discoloration around the border and here & there throughout. The discoloration looks slightly more pronounced here in the scan than it does in real life.

The white portions of the heavy-stock cardboard cover have also yellowed with age. The back shows more foxing, as well as a small stain off to the right side well outside any text or graphic area. There is no writing on the back. The right hand corners of the jacket are only slightly blunted, while the left hand corners are a little sharper. All the seams are firm & intact, and there are no creases or any edge wear of note.

The innersleeve is the original early 1966 'orange' colored "Capitol '66 Sounds Great!" design with the code PE-12-3BL. It is in fair shape with a 2" seam blow-out to the middle of one side & bottom. Otherwise clean, flat & functional.

Both sides of the record itself have hand-written matrix numbers, consistant with being manufactured in Los Angeles. Song selections are: Yesterday; Dr. Robert; I'm Only Sleeping; And Your Bird Can Sing; We Can Work It Out; Day Tripper; Nowhere Man; What Goes On?; Drive My Car; If I Needed Someone; Act Naturally, all with the original Mono mix, as produced by George Martin. The playing surface appears overall Excellent Minus (EX-) on Side-1, and Very Good (VG) on Side-2. To add insult to injury however, there is a skip at the very end of "Day Tripper" due to some kind of defect or damage to the playing surface which has distorted the grooves at a small spot, as revealed by a magnifying glass.

Although this would look great framed on the wall of a kooky beatnik pad, this cover is still quite Rare in any condition, and is being offered heree today in 'as-is' condition, to be considered only as a 'place-holder' in your collection.
