An overall nice condition & presentable copy of this increasingly hard to find and sought after 1964 UK 1st press Beatles classic on the yellow & black Parlophone label, 

MONO PMC 1240

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1    XEX 503 - 4N  with stampers "4" and "A R H" at 9 o'clock and 2.30 o'clock respectively 

Side 2    XEX 504 - 4N  with stampers "1" and "A M M" at 9 o'clock and 2.30 o'clock respectively

GRADINGS :

RECORD (Visual Grade / Condition Grade) :  Very Good plus (VG+) / very good plus (VG+)  Completely flat and heavy vinyl with lovely jet black sheen on both sides. Glossy in normal daylight with just a couple of small scuff marks showing (see photo) and it is only with close scrutiny under a bright light that some fine hairlines and a few extremely light paper scuff marks come into view on each side - nothing feelable and all appearing to be superficial.

LABELS : Excellent overall with the silver text, matt black background, and yellow Parlophone writing and logo all beautifully intact. Some small, faint spindle trails on each label. The "THE GRAMOPHONE..." & "SOLD IN UK..." & "RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED..." label texts all indicate a very early UK pressing.

OUTER SLEEVE : Very good (VG) : Fold-out unipack type gatefold sleeve, front and back laminated with interior flipbacks. Nice colours and clear definition on both the inside and outside, but there are some blemishes : some small laminate creases and laminate lifting adjacent to the spine on both the front and reverse sides, another area of laminate lifting next to the bottom edge (see photo), an area of laminate lifting at the top left corner on the reverse side (see photo), some further 1-2 cm light laminate surface creases perpendicular and adjacent to the edges, some mild flattening of the spine which is in otherwise very nice condition, and some compression/diagonal creasing in the top right corner on the front side. Each end of the spine is also scuffed, with the scuffing being a little more obvious at the bottom of the spine. The interior flipbacks are in great shape and there is no unwanted writing or doodles.

INNER SLEEVE : Original "USE EMITEX" and "MADE IN ENGLAND" poly-lined, die-cut inner sleeve with no rips or tears, barely any discolouration, no seam splits, but there is clear and noticeable creasing in each of the corners...remaining 100% functional, however. NOTE that I will place the record into a plain white inner sleeve (and separate from the outer sleeve) in order to protect the original inner sleeve during posting.

AUDIO QUALITY : Excellent minus (EX-) : Great tone and clarity throughout and the mono audio quality is excellent. No repeats, jumps, sticks or clicking (apart from a single click at the very end of side 1). There is just the hint of some very mild and background crackle at the beginning and end of each side and during a couple of the interludes but this really is negligible and does not impinge upon the overall truly impressive mono sound quality, with every track making for a great listen.

In summary an overall nice condition and presentable copy (the mono sound quality is especially impressive and the highlight) of this increasingly hard to find 1964 very early UK press Beatles classic - a worthy addition to any serious Beatles vinyl collection and only continuing to gain in value.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl thick cardboard "crucifix" style mailer along with at least two thick cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
