Offered for auction is a 'black box' edition of The Beatles Mono Collection which was marketed in 1981/82. Only 1,000 numbered 'black box' sets were produced; although manufactured for the North America market, through the Dutch East India Trading Company, copies found their way to numerous other countries.
This 1981 'mono' release was the first time that the Beatles UK mono mixes (mixes that were entirely different to the stereo mixes) had been pressed since the late 1960's when pressing of the Beatles mono-catalogue was deleted (a few albums, but not all, did get a mono release around 69/70). The majority of the '81 re-pressings were the famous analogue 'tube cuts' from the 60's i.e. the mono mixes were not remastered for this collection, the 'stampers' being struck from the original 'mothers'.
Moreover, not only do the labels that appear on the vinyl of this collection faithfully reproduce the 'Yellow Parlophone' and 'Apple' labels from the 60's, the catalogue numbers are the same as their 60's counterparts (i.e. 'PMCO' numbers) - something that's missing from the labels of the recent digital, and massively-interfered-with, remasters.
Of the ten albums in this collection, only Yellow Submarine is not a true mono mix - this being due to a separate mono mix of YS never being produced in the first place; the so-called 'mono' version was merely a single-channel 'fold-down' of the stereo mix.
The copy of Yellow Submarine, offered in this auction, is the mono pressing with mono labels - some sets were issued with stereo pressings and stereo labels; others with mono pressings and stereo labels.
