Label/Format: Parlophone – Four pronged black and silver format. First pressing with ‘The Gramophone Co Ltd’ and ‘Sold in UK’ etc text. Sides 2 and 4 have the embossed KT tax codes each side of the hole. These letters are superb, almost as made, so-much-so on side four, they are not even that easy to see. Most of these will chip and rub very quickly and even erode and flatten on heavily played examples. This pair appears to have had very few plays at all.

Label Conditions: Beautiful clean labels, the type that Beatles connoisseurs will treasure. Spindle marks are very few indeed, fine, small and light. No wear or chipping around the hole areas or even around the ultra fragile prong cut out areas either, are four are exceptional.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Few standard issue Beatles records are rare or even scarce with a few exceptions. Most sold in vast numbers. Conditions are a different matter and finding the mono issues especially in little played condition is far harder. This EP was available in both mono and stereo and those who bought the mono format usually did so to play on a mono record player (with the usual predictable results). Often stacked and dropped with other 45s, played on heavy tracking players, often with a worn stylus that destroyed the sound. Many, if not most were played into oblivion and are now unlistenable these days, especially when played on modern clinical stereo systems. This famous psych EP is difficult to find little played and including a superb, undamaged cover book – this truly is looking little short of new. Even the inners on this copy are unsplit, clean and very neat indeed. A premium example that sounds impressive with little unwanted, this too being played on a very revealing turntable, and so many 45 rpm records often crackled from new – fact.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Six songs as featured on the TV film ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, as originally issued on this double EP set with the beautiful book and double wallet packaging inside. Only later in the 1970s did the UK issue a full length 33.3 rpm album that included extra songs and then only in stereo. Only in the US did the full length album come out in mono. This beautiful early pressed ‘original’ EP is becoming elusive in such outstanding condition and this one sets a very high standard. Playing at 45 rpm will usually mean a little more surface sound and potential wear, but both of these records are hugely impressive visually and appear little played. The beautiful, but delicate book has been expertly looked after and again looks terrific, all pages firmly TRIPLE stapled, two of which are into the cover spine, a third central staple is inside. Giving little away in terms of age, all pages are super clean, practically unmarked with no creasing. The inside covers often set-off badly, but this has been avoided. This is dificult to avoid where the dark ink rests against white card but this shows nothing worthy of mention. The cover and book pages are in superb condition, and defy their great age. Any darkening or yellowing is minuscule. The inside laminate wraparound is a darker colour, but quite honestly I have never seen an example that isn’t and it totally natural. All staples original and rock solid and untarnished by rust. The single flipbacked storage areas are superb, often torn, damaged and very grubby due to lack of laminate protection, these are near perfect and any traces of marks or discolour barely visible. No chipping, creasing and has a near perfect spine and unusually, not badly feathering at the ends, just microscopic chip near the very bottom. All page edges are crisp and sharp. As for the records: the six songs all play with excellent clarity without crackle, pops or clicks, that must never be taken for granted on this, or any mono record. For sure, this, like all Beatles records, was mass-produced, but the pressing standard remains high and the discs flat. Any minor surface sounds minimal and faint. My LP12 not really designed to play such records being honest – a standard Sondek does not even play at 45rpm. A significant upgrade has to be made to do so which I did some years ago. Silence for all six songs is a massive ask, but this has little unwanted and I never really expect 45rpm records, especially this age to play as quiet as a long player. Even those two wavy top inner sleeves are superb and unsplit. With all considered, this beautiful all-round example will take a lot of beating.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): I think grading this mini-gem less would not be doing it full justice – this is just a shade of Mint with very to fault on this beautifully preserved and delicate book-cover. The best I have seen for a considerable time. A beautiful thick cover with a 24-page book inside that includes stills from the film, lyrics and psychedelic cartoons. Two laminated single flipbacks, one at front and one at back, the original blue colour pages are included too as seen in the very centre. Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. A minature work of art that really should please most-all Beatles collectors.

Lamination: The laminate on the front, back and spine is practically full Mint – just one fine hairline on the front spine edge that hardly shows. Shiny, very fresh and clear with no scuffs, dulling, marks or lifting. The graphics looking magnificent with no loss of colour or beauty. This outside cover looks practically as made and totally unaged.

The Book: All pretty much described in my preamble. The pages are very clean with no tears, splits or creases all with very neat edges. Any hint of burring minuscule, but tiny hints are just seen viewed end on being ultra critical. Quite unusually too, this is dead flat with no humidity waviness that many get over time. Once this sets in, little to nothing can flatten it again and all pages here are very flat indeed. All 24-pages are very clean and looking terrific. Artwork is sublime. The three staples are almost like new and untarnished.

Top Edges: Straight and neat and folded very square, the pages with minimal overhang from the covers.

Bottom Edges: As above or even better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, crisp and sharp with barely any wear at all, these fine ends, that retain all artwork, have rock solid laminate with no cracking. Records are stored inside the front and back covers behind a delicate fixed flap (both rock solid, mostly very clean and untorn or split).

Spine and Text: Near Perfect: solid, square, uncompressed with both staples unloosened as made, both originals of course. No text printed on this cover and this is folded squarely, hence both right edges are parallel and flush making a very neat and tidy cover. One tiny chip only at the very bottom of the corner.

Corners: The one tiny chip apart, all are near perfect with fantastic shape retained with no dinks or creases.

Cover Summary: A absolute beauty, a stunning all-round example of this famous Beatles double EP cover, one that will prove very difficult indeed to find better. This beautiful, barely aged item should please most-all collectors, even the most discerning can consider it too, it truly offers massive upgrade appeal.

The Inner Sleeves: Both EXCELLENT(++): unlined with open windows and with the distinctive wavy top openings. Both still incredibly white with four pristine window circles, minimal hint of creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Those wavy top openings still crisp with excellent definition. The back sides of both have two external flipback construction, these unburred and solid. Few available examples with have these fragile inners looking better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better. Mono 45rpm records now into their 48th year will rarely be found much better. A very impressive visual pair with only very light and fine surface traces seen under bright light. A couple of fine hairlines are purely surface and superficial, indeed this plays devoid of pops or noteworthy ticks it will take a very special, almost unplayed pair to better them significantly. Clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, these look very nice indeed. With the majority of these and similar records seen little short of trashed, this pair on the other side of the vinyl spectrum. Not for the absolute perfectionist who only want ‘as new’ – and good luck with that with utmost scrutiny, but most fans will enjoy these.

Records Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilaus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This pair of seven inch records appear very little played. Both EPs play to their high visual grading, and mostly even above with very little to fault. Strong, dynamic mono sound, with a different delivery of the music compared to the more familiar stereo version. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed, typically psychedelic sound, perfectly produced, as usual by George Martin. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and sound quality if exceptionally high for 45rpm records. That speed meaning any blemishes are more audible as they contact the stylus harder, being faster, but barely anything here. The lack of irritating crackle and clicks being the major factor that blight so many. I seldom offer 45s, preferring the more reliable sound of long players. But clearly, this is a special case, and for UK listeners, this was the only way to hear these songs in mono without resorting to the expense of imports. No inherent pressing noises or tracking issues*, I enjoyed hearing these vintage classics again after what had been a long time. This Beatles mini-classic will prove challenging to find significantly better in mono and the cover is a pure work of unaged art. Strong recommendation is mandatory.

End Piece: Delightfully packaged with enjoyable sound with little unwanted, this mini-album is never easy to find in clean all-round conditions, this is a class product in every respect. An age-defying example all considered, the records are not unmarked but only lightly and superficially so with NO penetrating scratches. That is unusual, one jolt or drop of that old mono needle, and there’s another copy written-off, this has simply not happened on this one. The cover and even the inner sleeves are truly exceptional – I can truly state I have never seen a better one. Study my pictures and judge for yourself, all the book pages are typical for all.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
