Description
HERE is a fab original UK mono copy of Please Please Me by The Beatles on the sought after black and gold Parlophone label. This is one of the very first copies produced, with a full set of the withdrawn Dick James credits, published before Northern Songs received a mention. But not only that - this lovely example features incredibly early 1G/1R mother stampers, and therefore would have been among the first batch of 500 or so copies to leave the pressing plant. As such it delivers amazing playback, virtually taking you back into the studio all those years ago.
And it really does deliver. Placing the stylus on side one unleashes all the raw talent of the Fab Four setting out on their way to conquer the world. I Saw Her Standing There is magnificent - playback from this 1G/1R pressing is incredibly bright and vibrant, capturing for the first time on long playing vinyl all the energy and confidence of the fabulous Beatles.
Both black and gold labels are virtually perfect, with very little spindle activity or wear discernible. There is a raised M T tax code on side two, but it is hard to see, as it has not rubbed at all, and remains the colour of the label.
The disc, with 1N/1N matrices endings, is in strong VG condition. Plentiful light marks show up on either side of the vinyl when examined under strong halogen lighting but there are no deep scratches, and during my test play I heard NO pops or clicks. There are, of course, no skips or jumps either - just a little light background sound here and there. Most black and gold discs described as VG turn out to look like skating rinks, have huge worn areas around their spindle holes and are virtually unplayable - well, this is a very playable example.
The front laminated flipback Ernest J Day sleeve with correct Angus Bean photo credit is also a strong VG with very little creasing but wear to the corners, some minor rubbing, some damage to the top and bottom flipbacks and some discolouration of the unlaminated rear.
