Label/Format etc: Parlophone – Black & Yellow format that has the ‘Parlophone Co Ltd’ rim text and the ‘record first published’ or ‘sold in UK’ making this the second pressed format on the new Yellow and Black style labels. These are intense black with a matt finish and the area within the inner ridge ring is textured. Included on side one are the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes and both shows barely any traces or wear, so-much-so, they are not that easy to even see. On a typical well-played copy of this immensely popular record, they are often seen worn right down to white.

Label Conditions/Info: Both look impressively clean with a high degree of freshness. Nearly as black as the vinyl itself and not so easy to find looking this clean. Spindle marks are only light+ and fine and faint. Any marks from old steel autochanger spindles used at this time are minimal, often these could and did remove the surface ink leaving trails of white gouge marks. Evidence suggests this record has been played a few times, the surfaces have a few light non-penetrating marks, hence NO pops or clicks were heard. Overall sound is very good with just faint traces of sound dimishing, but this being played on a hugely revealing Linn LP12 stereo turntable. This record was never designed to be played on equipment like this but more at home on the Dansettes of the day. An album so often seen played into the ground with very worn, noisy sound and often bad distortion with shredded groove walls. Early mono record players were ruthless with massive tracking weights and very thick diameter stylus that wore and chipped easily. Many ignored changing them and rarely were tracking angles even considered, played them until the tips were worn to stubs. All too late and the damage was done, hence so many are totally unlistenable. Many loaned and taken to parties and played on god-knows-what. Left on floors, tables and covered with scratches and grubby fingermarks – we have all seen such examples – I will not touch such worn out rubbish. This still very attractive record has avoided such trauma and abuse and looks and plays well, not pristine perfect, but it gives a very fine account of itself even on hugely revealing modern stereo equipment. The cover is very impressive, and this is much rarer Ernest J. Day version that is quite different to the G&L version. For those collectors who cannot afford or choose not to want to spend a king’s ransom on a black and gold copy, this is more than a compromise. A very early Beatles debut in mono that will offer real value-for-money and still offers fine sound.

Rarity & Details: I always state that Beatles albums are not rare with a few exceptions. It’s the conditions that make the early copies exceptional for the reasons outlined above. This album sold in vast numbers, so-much-so, the pressing plant could not keep up with demand. Even the Black & Gold pressings are not that rare in mono but are in decent condition. Grey, dulled and scratched records are almost the norm for this vintage record, those who bought the early copies played into oblivion and most are only fit for the bin. Covers became tatty and many were written on so when loaned out or taken to parties. Finding the lighter, more carefully played copies is far, far harder and those devoid of damage or major groovewear even harder. Even a modest few plays would begin to degrade the sound, this has mild traces as such, but even on via the LP12, it still offers strong and enjoyable sound. If this is to be played on a less revealing system, it will (I feel sure) reveal even lesser traces of wear. This album at its best in mono is stunning, truly stunning – at its worst when badly worn, horrible. This copy plays with generally, impressive sound with any clipping very light. The sheer power of the recording and song quality still shines through and the lack of pops and clicks is a huge bonus. Sounding probably what most would consider to be just right for a record this huge age with just enough to lightly remind of such. The sonic power, depth of sound, reality and detail on the early pressings can never be beaten and this one still delivers. When you consider what many of these look and sound like these days, this one has clearly survived any major traumas or abuse. It’s simply been played a few times on the equipment of the day and I suggest fairly carefully. Certainly no arms drops or jolts to cause catastrophic crators or furrows to two still clean and shiny looking playing surfaces. The original inner is included too with its ‘Patents applied for’ text. This has aged little and rarer EJD cover looks very impressive indeed. Like the Black & Golds, the early format Yellow & Blacks are quite rare in such clean conditions. If modest used copy of this classic is wanted, well this is one to consider. Perfect?, well no, but for sure, it will deliver very fine sound for many years to come as long expectations are not too high. If absolute razor sharp pristine sound is mandatory, this is not quite for you.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The legendary debut that started the greatest musical phenomenon in popular music history. Beautifully produced by George Martin and this record still gives a strong insight to it’s original quality. A vintage fourth pressing and second on the yellow & black format. Collectors will know about this record anyway (I was only six when this record was made and I never claim to know all the fine details). With a very strong and rarer EJ Day cover, original inner and more than highly respectable record, this is certainly worthy of consideration.

Cover Potential for Wear & Damage: High – Simply due to it’s great age and popularity, this was often moved around and handled a great deal, often found at parties or loaned to friends. The early examples of this cover were much thicker and heavy, that said, the ‘Day’ versions are less thick and more susceptible to damage. Examples with minimal dulling, creasing or laminate issues are never easy to find. Backs still looking anything like white with no ring marks, grubbiness or significant flipback damage are getting increasingly difficult to find too. The best examples often locked away in valuable collections and rarely made available. Most seen are the G&L versions, the ‘Day’ version is somewhat more elusive.

Cover Grade & Format: EXCELLENT: and very arguably undergraded at that, a conservative grading on a cover this impressive age. A single format with a laminated front, this wraps around the closed edges on to three huge rear flipbacks. The card is a little thinner than the G&L version and flipback ends are angle cut instead of rounded on the spine, a unique trait of this version. It has the very large ‘mono’ on the front and the Angus McBean credit. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co. An example that defies its great age and is a thing of genuine beauty.

Cover Front: A very impressive front – if a black and gold has one this fine, collectors would swoon over it – fact. The laminate retains an impressive shine, freshness and clarity and all is fully adhered with no lifting or peeling. Any dulling is very light and mild seen under light around the rim shape, but far less than most seen. This has avoided any chipping, and that is never easy either. A few, mainly light surface creases, mostly around the edges and just one half moon. The artwork richly coloured and vivid and barely aged at all, even the vulnerable right edge is sharp and unburred or grubby. Without doubt this has been carefully looked after and stored, and I would be confident this has not seen light-of-day for decades.

Cover Back: The back as lightly darkened to a slightly off-white, but consistenly so, I think looking perfect for it’s vast age. Minimal traces of grubbiness or marks with barely hint of any pressmarks or ringwear. The flipback ends are clean and precise and the ‘EJD’ angled ends pristine. The bottom one has a small area of the edge with a mild burr but little else to fault with the ends being very clean and devoid of grubbiness. I for one would be more than content if all covers deep into their 40s looked this clean and neat and it will take a superlatively stored one to better it significantly.

Top Edge: Totally unworn, smooth, unscuffed and white with full laminate.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much as above, the lack of chipping on this storage edge is fairly unusual.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp and unthickened with no featuring, burring or grubbiness. Few examples with have such a neat entrance edge, remember the sheer weight of the record inside for five decades. Absolutely guaranteed, NO trimming.

Spine and Text: Superb: near pristine. Solid, straight with maybe a littlel mild compression. All text pristine Mint perfect under clean, solid and shiny laminate. Really beautiful, I hope my picture shows this well.

Corners: All four very neat and crisp with any tip rubbing tiny and light. One of the few I have seen unchipped or dinked, these have even avoided any creases.

Cover Summary: One of the rarest ever Beatles covers and a delightful example. This is highly attractive and a very important piece of musical history. For me personally, it has to be my best yet and it will please most realistic Beatles fans that should very much enjoy owning it. Excellent, well I think I have been far to conservative but better than overgrading I feel.

The Inner: MINT(-): and an absolutely incredible inner. A time-warp inner with just the odd tiny mark and minimal discolouration. Even avoiding age toning, this more than justifies my top grading level. A very solid, robust inner that is polylined with a clear, neat window with pristine circles. The lining very solid with only a little gentle crinkle. This has the important ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text and shows no creases worthy of mention and all edges unsplit. The top opening is very sharp and neat too and few will ever show less blemishing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): properbly graded. By definition a Very Good record should still be exactly that, not swathed in deep penetrating scratches with dull, greyed vinyl that has been played to near destruction. Just compare to most around that will be more recent copies too. A very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and a real heavyweight pressing. Very thick vinyl with wide, deep grooves and looking lovely. These vintage records could withstand normal mono record play usage for a time, but any arm dropping or scraping across the grooves always proved disasterous – this has avoided that with NO penetrating scratches. Yes some light and small surface marks and superficial mild scuffs that few will avoid totally. The fact is, these do not sound and only the hardly played mono examples this age or popularity will better this significantly. Clearly it’s avoided all the usual traumas of the Dansette or other vintage single-channel record players, genuine early copies rarely do so and there lies the difference. This major Beatles record will not be too easy to find significantly better. But if unmarked records are for you, this is not.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful and groundbreaking piece of vinyl history plays above it’s visual grading. The sound remains mostly clear with no pressing noises but does portray a little mild clipping to lose the top end sharpness, mostly to the inner-most bands on the latter songs. This is being quite critical and I have to emphasise again, being played on a ruthlessly revealing system. The Linn LP12 was not designed to play mono records and any record like this that can still offer anything like enjoyable sound is something of an achievement. Overall, sound quality is impressive with a massive dynamic range and a ultra loud mono mix. The rule applies, the earlier the pressing, the cleaner the sound and this album was pressed so many times as the matrix details above prove. I am a highly critical listener, and yes, this does have a little mild sound degrading, but this is being somewhat critical of a 1963 record. It is almost unreasonable not to expect minor sound blemishing on a record now fast approaching 50. Truthfully, many are totally unlistenable. Lennon’s shrill harmonica almost removes the speaker cloth and sends a shiver down the spine – still pretty focused, clear and precise. This record tracks perfectly and the lack of pops and clicks a real bonus. Even the final song, ‘Twist & Shout’ plays pretty well – the sheer volume and power on this difficult track is truly incredible. Recorded so loud, it almost saturates and will test the tracking of lesser equipment. Here at the most critical tracking angle of all, so many break-up totally and sound a real mess. The legendary production by Martin takes you into the recording studio itself. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this astonishing record, I almost expect a little mild sound degrading at the least on a record this age, especially in mono. Many collectors actually like to be remind they are actually listening to a vintage record without the clinical clarity of perfection – a CD will offer noise-free and crystal clear sound – so you pays you money and takes your choice. What is certain, nothing betters hearing this classic pop music from an early cut vinyl disc, even if with minor sound imperfection. This record does not have constant crackle or anything like that, purely mild top end light clipping from a record that has been used a few times. A proper Very Good record that will please many collectors but the perfectionists. I found this enjoyable and if that had not been the case, believe me, I would not have offered it. Any doubts, do not bid.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
