THE BEATLES - PLEASE PLEASE ME.

ORIGINAL UK 1st PRESSING with GOLD and BLACK labels.

RECORD NUMBER is PCS 3042.

This pressing has the "DICK JAMES MUSIC CO" publishing credits after the McCartney/Lennon songs.

It also appears to have the original polythene lined inner sleeve that advertises "EMITEX" cleaning products.

MATRIX NUMBERS SIDE 1 - YEX 94-1

Side one also has a letter 'R' stamped into the run off at about 3 o'clock.

MATRIX NUMBERS SIDE 2 - YEX 95-1

Side two has the letter 'G' stamped at about 3 o'clock and also has the number 1 stamped in the run off at about 9 o'clock.

Side one label appears to have the letters ZMT wriiten around the centre hole.

Firstly please can I say that I am selling this record on behalf of a friend and we have both done a bit of homework into the record and do believe it to be the original Beatles PLEASE PLEASE ME stereo first pressing. I am more used to selling Hawkwind records etc so we could both be wrong with this so if we are wrong could someone please let me know.

Below I have graded the record to a description of "FAIR" from the record collector 2000 price guide.

The record does actually play through reasonably well with only a couple of major faults which I will list after the record collector description.

RECORD COLLECTORS GRADE OF "FAIR"

I am going to grade the record as "FAIR" and this is the text I have taken from record collector..

THE RECORD IS STILL JUST PLAYABLE AND HAS NOT BEEN CARED FOR PROPERLY AND DISPLAYS CONSIDERABLE SURFACE NOISE. THE COVER AND CONTENTS WILL BE TORN, STAINED AND/OR DEFACED.

FULL DESCRIPTION OF RECORD

The record has been play tested all the way through on both sides.

It has been played with a needle weight of 1 1/2 grams so hopefully all the defects were audible.

Please do remember though that every record player is different.

The record has been very well played over the years and not very well looked after since it was bought in 1963. Both sides do have lots of surface marks and scratches.

It's not a pretty picture when viewed under a strong light. It's not that pretty in any light!!

When i first saw the record I did not think it would play as well as it actually does.

There are two serious "THUDS" or "DINKS" one on either side. The first is a loud "THUD" near the end of the 4th song on side one "Chains". The needle does not seem to jump but it does sound like it dissapears down the "GRAND CANYON".

The second loud "THUD" is on the third song on side two "Baby it's You". You will hear a few loud clicks and then the "THUMP" but it is not as bad as the one on side one.

Because of all the surface marks and scatches to both sides there is a fair amount of surface noise and a certain number of clicks and pops all the way through the discs on both sides.

Now I know all that sounds pretty bad but I honestly did enjoy listening to the record. It is a shame about the faults and the noise but having said all that it is still listenable to if you don't mind a bit of noise. Most of it is actually in the grooves between the songs anyway.

Even though the condition is not great it is still a nice bit of rock history.

LABEL CONDITIONS

Both the gold and black labels are in a reasonable condition. Both have spindle marks, side one has more than side two. Both are fairly clean with no tears and the gold text on both is still readable.

SLEEVE CONDITION

Please try not to laugh to much.

As I hope you can see from the pictures the original sleeve has suffered badly over the years.

I would actually grade it as "POOR".

There is not a great deal you can say about this except that it has probably seen "Better Days".

It has many tears and splits, all the corners are chewed and someone has wrote "Del Love Chinky" on the back.

Does anyone know Del or Chinky?

All in all I do believe that it is the correct sleeve but in a very poor condition.

INNER SLEEVE

The record does still have what seems to be the original and correct polythene lined inner sleeve but again it is not in the best of conditions. It does have tears to the opening edge and is also heavily creased. The opening top edge has also browned over the years.

TO SUM UP

A rare Beatles collectable in possibly one of the worst conditions you have ever seen but it is not worth throwing this bit of rock history away because it is what it is. And even if it was snapped in half it would still be great!

I also now would like to add this into the description off the record. There are a few tracks which are mostly on side one where the vocals sound a little distant. They are not as crisp as other tracks on the lp. I don't know but maybe they were made like this because for my sins this is the first time I have ever heard this lp. I have played them through with a newer needle and they were better but it's probably more likely that because the vinyl has been very well played and not looked after at all over the years that it has actually lost some of the sound quality. The music still sounds OK though. I thought it should be pointed out.
