1963 2nd Pressing
1st Press Matrices 1N/ 1N
Format: Mono
This is the ultra-rare 2nd pressing of Please Please Me. The general consensus is that around 25,000 of the Black & Gold 1st pressings (with incorrect Dick James Mus. Co. credits on four of the tracks) were pressed, and when the error was identified around 12,000 of these corrected Northern Songs credits were pressed - before the changeover was made to the new yellow and black Parlophone labels.
The pressing run for Black & Gold Parlophone labels was short-lived lasting only a couple of months starting on 22nd March 1963. You’ll see several Dick James 1st pressings which are also rare, before you see one of these 2nd pressings.
Sleeve:
The Gold sleeve is in Good Plus Condition. It is still sturdy and strong and holds the record securely. There is top right corner wear and a little creasing to the fold-overs on the rear, the bottom flip back has been cellotaped down. The spine is split in the middle. It’s still really clean and bright on the front and back panels, and the text is nice and clear including the ‘Photo: Angus McBean’ credit on the front panel. No other rips or tears, and the edges are still smooth.
Inner Sleeve: Original ‘Made In Great Britain’ text poly-lined thin paper poly-lined inner completely intact. (The other variant being the thick paper ‘Made In England’ text).
The Vinyl: The vinyl is in quite an unfortunate condition, visually Poor to Fair condition. Side 1 is quite badly scratched with a few scuffs near the run-out groove. Side 2 is much better with far fewer light hairlines and just one or two lightly feelable scratches and no scuffs. In a good light it still looks like a pretty nice example on both sides, and in any light it still retains its original pressing sheen on both sides with no clouding. It has no warps and lies completely flat on the turntable.
The Labels: As can be seen from the photos, they are not looking new, however all text is easily readable, and it’s always good to see the gold PARLOPHONE logo.
The Audio: It never fails to astound me how resilient and robust these solid early Sixties vinyl LP’s are. The audio is better than its condition portrays. As it has’t lost much of its pressing sheen and there is no evidence of groove wear, the background noise and crackles are very very minimal if at all. However, Side 1 has more than a dozen jumps and and several sticks. Side 2 is far better with no jumps or sticks but has a few loud ticks in places. The audio still does come through nice and crisp on both sides. No pops or skips. Warm mono bass and clear vocals and instrumentals.

A piece of music history which is getting harder and harder to find in any condition!
