Front cover:

The mono covers were manufactured by Garrard & Lofthouse or Ernest J. Day.  This example is a G & L sleeve and has the words "TRADE MARK OF THE GRAMOPHONE CO. LTD." under the Parlophone logomark, the E. J. Day sleeve does not. In the original photo taken for the cover, there is a loose thread on right shoulder of John's jacket. This was airbrushed out on most covers in the U.K.

There are at least two subtypes which feature differences in printing type in the song title and artist name - this version has the song and artist in 'Roman' text.

The matrix"-1 (one)" cuttings of the mono UK "Rubber Soul" are reported to be different from subsequent versions (so-called "Loud Cut"), in that after they were issued, the EMI cutting engineers were requested to cut down on the bass, since early buyers complained of skipping needles due to mistracking.
Early first-pressing copies were pressed with loud mixing version (whose inner groove says XEX 579-1 and XEX 580-1).

Grading notes:

Vinyl: NM - NEAR MINT (PLEASE SEE BELOW).

Nice and crisp. Barely played. Lovely sheen. Deep gloss playing surface. Aside from very faint removal marks, no visual blemishes or signs of needlewear. No groove wear or play wear. Lies flat and true on the turntable. Nice punchy analogue sound. Only the very faintest static evident during the quieter passages. Naturally as a first press this is the much sought-after "loud" cut and the bass sounds are sharper and more intense than on later presses of this record and with a keen ear (through headphones) the famed mistracking can just about be detected. The sound is naturally not as nuanced as the '5' matrix which has a smoother more polished audiophile cut but this loud cut is magnificent and fills the room and blows away the cobwebs superbly! Really hard to find in such superb condition.

Sleeve: EX+. Original Ernest J Day gatefold. Generally crisp and clean. Sleeve has very minimal wear - one of the best examples I've seen. Very minor shelf wear. Light edgewear. The faintest rubbing on the rear panel - laminate is perfect and intact and blemish free: generally bright and unworn. Very very minor lifting at centre of opening. Small 1cm creases visible under light on front cover. Spine is crisp and unflattened and the text is clear and bold.

Inner sleeves: original "Use EMITEX" printed poly-lined rice paper inner. Some rippling and light creases and one small half CM tear around the centre on one side from storage but fully intact.

Labels: Super clean. Barely any spindle marks or signs of any play.

GOOD: THE RECORD HAS BEEN PLAYED SO MUCH THAT THE SOUND QUALITY HAS NOTICEABLY DETERIORATED, PERHAPS WITH SOME DISTORTION AND MILD SCRATCHES. THE COVER AND CONTENTS SUFFER FROM FOLDING, SCUFFING, SPINE SPLITS, DISCOLOURATION ETC.

FAIR: THE RECORD IS JUST PLAYABLE, BUT HAS NOT BEEN CARED FOR PROPERLY AND DISPLAYS CONSIDERABLE NOISE, IT MAY EVEN JUMP. THE COVER AND CONTENTS WILL BE TORN, STAINED ETC.
