First “Loud Cut” pressing. December 3, 1965.“Loud Cut” matrix: XEX 579-1. When “Rubber Soul” was initially mixed it was slightly different to how we hear it today. These early mixes only ever appeared in mono and are distinguished by the matrix numbers XEX 579-1 / XEX 580-1 in the deadwax. It’s argued that these early presses were unbalanced with a muddy bass and with an edgy, aggressive vocal sound. Since these copies seemed to lack body the decision was made to halt production whilst the mother plates were re-cut.
The record offered in this auction is this "579-1" edition.
VINYL: The condition of the vinyl is visually 'only' good, with a number of surface marks visible on each side (which may be removable via cleaning). However, and as is often the case with thick-vinyl of this vintage, the integrity of linear playback is not compromised; this means that each and every track plays without jumping or sticking. This is a record that has obviously been played numerous times in the 48 years since original purchase and there are a few - and I mean only a few - pops and crackles peppered throughout the LP. This record is not a minter, it is a used copy that still gives a good playback experience. The LP is super-flat as the proverbial pancake (no dishing or warping of any kind)
LABELS: Both labels are in very good overall condition. Both are clean and free of writing, stickers, glue residue from removed stickers, stamps or any other evidence of 'previous owner' markings. Each label has 'play' artefacts such as wear at the spindle and spots of paper wear (see hi-res pictures, above). Side 1 has the 'KT' tax stamp.
SLEEVE: The Garrod & Lofthouse flapback mono sleeve is in VG+ condition. No writing, stickers or repairs. All seams, including the all-important spine, are intact and unsplit. The side-opening has bumping but no fluffing/featering. All three backflaps are firmly attached and fully present. Front surface has one or two small creases to the laminate. Rear surface has friction/rubbing markings here and there.
SUMMARY: A good overall copy of the infamous UK 'loud cut'. Not for the audio-purist or the collector of 'mint' pressings but a respectable enough example for those whose budgets do not extend to 'minters', or those who desire a 'placeholder' until that 'minter' comes up for sale, or those who simply want a 'play copy'.
