Label/Format: Parlophone, matt with a faint hint of texturing. This a 1969 stereo repress on the new black, white and silver format with the scarce one box format. This very quickly changed to the more familiar two box version.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This record appears hardly played.

Up and Down Movement: A gentle trace. Few vintage records will ever be perfectly flat, any issues with significant movement or tracking will be mentioned in detail if applicable.

Rarity: Like most Beatles standard issue albums, this sold in vast quantities. As usual, condition is the paramount factor and far fewer Beatles albums pressed in the 1960s survive with few plays and avoiding mistreatment. The one box 1969 Parlophone label is one the rarest variants as it was only available for a very few months. Not only does this record appear hardly played, this copy includes the cover still in its original shrink wrapping. Yes, it has been opened on one edge, but the majority of the cover’s surface has not been exposed with the front especially hardly at all. Finding any UK Beatles album still in this delivery protective shrink wrapping is immensely rare and few are likely still still exist as such.

Brief Info: ‘Revolver’ is the seventh Beatles album and is regarded by many as their greatest album. and even one of the greatest albums ever made. Most fans and collectors will already know this album well enough. This a rarely seen 1969 one-box label format stereo copy appearing hardly played and the cover still inside it’s original shrink wrapping with the HMV shop ‘G’ price code sticker. Being in this original protective plastic means the majority of the cover has not been handled since it left the factory back in 1969 after it was packed for distribution to retailers. Any owner who left this wrapping on the cover wanted it to remains practically as-made, and this is very close to just that. A find indeed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back on three external flipbacks. The back is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. As stated, this cover retains it’s plastic clear shrink wrapping and HMV shop price code sticker on it. The cover front appears to have a similar sticker on it as well, but this largely covered by the one above it. The sepia colour EMI promotional inner sleeve is also included.

Lamination & Front: As far as I can tell, this front is practically pristine, the only tiny exposed area is on the bottom right corner where the shrink wrap has pulled back a little. The wrapping is tight and clings to the laminated surface. In a way, I was tempted to remove the wrapping to expose what I assume is a stunning almost unblemished cover, but decided not to as when (or if) I would ever seen another Beatles album still in this original protective covering.

Cover Back: The wrapping on the back has pulled back more on this side to expose approximately 1/12 (1 inch) of the back’s surface on the left. Clearly, to access the record, the wrap has to be cut on the opening edge, and over time it has contracted and pulled back a little. But given this is 50-years-old, this wrap has survived in near amazing condition – and I would assume the cover is the same beneath as seen. Any handling traces to the exposed card are few and faint.

The Folded Edges: All three are covered by the wrapping bar an inch on the bottom right. So there is not rubbing or wear to the surfaces. There may be some patchy compression to the spine, but the lack of bowing from the tight wrapping is a major plus as is the lack of wear to any of text.

Right Opening Edge: This has some light thickening and the only reason why this was not graded higher. Slight curl near the top due to the contraction of the wrapping – a minor blemish, but pretty much unavoidable for most covers that retain the wrapping.

Corners: All close to as-made with no knocks. Even the right exposed ones have barely anything to fault.

Cover Summary: A rare and unusual find for sure, this is the very first Beatles covers I have had retaining it’s original shrink wrapping. It all adds history to this groundbreaking masterpiece. Not just for specialist Beatles collectors, the wrapping has preserved the cover to almost the highest standard possible. This beautiful item should please many fans and collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the sepia unlined promotional inner sleeve has aged little with any of the few creases light on the top of the back. Any discolouration gentle, little and light with all edges naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Even though a slightly later pressing, there was no compromise on quality or vinyl weight, indeed, this 1969 pressing was way less mass-produced than the earlier copies. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, mostly very light. wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this still early first repressing on the new Parlophone label design. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
