It was the summer of 1964, and it had been a whole three months (!!!) since a new Beatles album from Capitol Records -- The Beatles' Second Album, assembled from various sources -- had been released to eager U.S. fans (and topped the charts). In the meantime, in addition to doing a tour of the U.S., the group had released their debut movie, A Hard Day's Night -- but the U.S. rights to the soundtrack were owned by United Artists Records (that was, in fact, the basis for United Artists' original interest in producing the movie), which had duly released its soundtrack in late June (and saw it top the charts). Capitol didn't have the soundtrack rights, but it was allowed to use most of the songs from the film; and as it turned out, the Beatles had delivered as fine a body of songs for the movie as they had for any of their albums up to that point -- songs that, as Capitol executives soon discovered, worked just as well in their combination. And so Something New was released about a month after UA's soundtrack, and if it wasn't as strong as the two preceding U.S. albums, in any other context and circumstance it would have been a contender for best rock & roll album of the year. Grouped alongside the band's hard-rocking, first-rate covers of Carl Perkins' "Matchbox" and Larry Williams' "Slow Down," and topped out with their German-language rendition of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" ("Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand"), which probably couldn't fit anywhere else, the Hard Day's Night material sounded fine, and few fans seemed to mind paying twice for the songs that overlapped between the two albums. And no one seemed to notice that this is where the 11-song Beatles' album comes into being, Capitol reasoning out that their material was so strong that they could get away with shaving off one track from the standard dozen, which became routine in the two years of U.S.-created releases that followed.
(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
If you are a European, be forewarned: this is a VERY different version of the album from the one you are used to hearing (actually, European version of this album does not even exist - European equivalent of this album would probably be "Beatles for Sale", the group's fourth UK album): American mixes of the Beatles albums are generally different, more "raw" and placing much more emphasis on guitar licks and lines (this one is no exception).
This is the third Beatles Capitol album, and - like all American versions of Beatles albums - this one, too, is different from the British counterpart in name, number of the tracks, mixing and overall packaging. Courtesy of Capitol Records, who decided to reissue only the EUROPEAN versions of the Beatles albums, we will probably never - ever - see this gorgeous 1964 package again. This may be your final chance to grab a piece of history in a condition you see here.
Track listing: Things we said today - Any time at all - When I get home - Slow Down - Matchbox - Komm, gib mir deine hand (I want to hold your hand sung in German) - I'll cry instead - Tell me why - And I love her - I'm happy just to dance with you - If I fell.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d) Stereo pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 5:1.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
- Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners. (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
- Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam and spne
- Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (just a beginning of the split seam)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
