Label/Format: Parlophone with matt surfaces that have a very gentle hint of texturing. This a first issue format with all the details as seen. Side two has the embossed ‘K T’ letters, both immaculate.

Label Conditions: Both very clean and fresh and attractive labels that have barrely aged at all. All colour registration perfect with minimal traces of handling. Spindle are very few, equally fine and faint, so hard to find a mono copy of this groundbreaking album so obviously little used.

Rarity: Like most standard Beatles albums, this sold in vast numbers, even today, one of the most popular albums ever made. Condition is always of prime concern, especially in mono, this one superb with sound to match. All elements of the set are impressive, nothing more important for me than audio quality that can only be described as awesome – this using the term correctly.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Any music lover, collector and Beatles fan will know all about this groundbreaking classic. What I think is far more important is to make clear what is actually here on offer and the visual and playing conditions.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a fully laminated gatefold format with the two external top flipbacks inside. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the insert sheet and graphic inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with hardly any lifting – a tiny one on the bottom front left corner tip, showing little. Minimal dulling and only gentle rim impression seen under light on the intense colour red back. Any marks are few and very fine indeed, again as seen with more scrutiny under angled light. A couple of half moon laminate creases on the front, and one on the back, again seen little with normal full-on viewing. Some very fine and small edge hairline creases are rarely avoided, and a small tip crease on the front lower left. For a cover fast approaching 50, this has survived in excellent condition and remains attractive as seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside practically Mint as-made, even the laminate on the central hinge is unbroken or cracked and remains tight with a reassuring creak when opened. It refused to open fully, and it is not to be forced or that rare unbroken hinge laminate with crack. Both flipbacks immaculate with no sticking, grubbiness or pulling of their ends. This inside can justifiably be described as exceptional.

Top Edges: Both flat, straight and flush with no wear to the smooth unchipped laminate.

Bottom Edges: As above with just a small rub to the front right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on, this on the front, the back has barely any. Record normally enters on the back edge, both are open, and are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A standard spine on this one, they are very prone to compression and forming central ridges on opening. This results in flaking and laminate loss, the text often sinking into the central area. This has largely been avoided with the text fully present and easy to read as seen in close-up. This a little more rounded than some, the top fold has not really happened which has naturally protected this one from the usual wear and damage. It gives a more flatter appearance, but it has not suffered any major compression, the text is seen from front viewing. These covers were manufactured in massive numbers, so construction and minor folding errors are far from uncommon. It remains solid, straight with gentle compression, folded square, so the edges are parallel, but the right edges are not quite flush. A difficult spine that has fared well compared to many seen.

Corners: As stated already, just a small tip rub on the front bottom right, and a gentle small crease to it’s bottom opposite. Shape remains very fine and mostly excellent, up to as-made.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or very close to, this is very nice compared to many seen. This the original graphic inner that was replaced in 1969 to a plain white version. Generally clean, little aged with only a little creasing near the bottom edge. A little gentle discolouration to politely remind of age with any traces of rubbing also light near the rim areas. These were never lined, hence most found have large edge splits which this has avoided. Like all others I have seen, it includes the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

The Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): deep colour, fresh and clean with no creasing, put simply – almost as issued.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine mono record that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with very modest, careful plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly wispy, ultra fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light, there is a long but very fine hairline on side two that does absolutely nothing. There are no penetrating stylus scratches at all, the record plays beautifully. Compared to high percentages of mono popular records that show up, this is simply fantastic. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This more challenging mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – many regard it as the greatest mono-mode album ever issued. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, hardly anything noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few earlier copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a stereo system, for which it was not really designed. I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Compared to most that surface, this is near exceptional, it will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
