THE BEATLES - SGT. PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND
A lovely copy of this 1967 UK 1st press Beatles masterpiece on the PARLOPHONE label, mono PMC 7027
Matrix Numbers :
Side 1 XEX 637 - 1 with stampers "4" and "A D D" at 11.30 o'clock and 5.30 o'clock respectively
Side 2 XEX 638 - 1 with stampers "2" and "A D D" at 11.30 o'clock and 5.30 o'clock respectively
The appearance of the vinyl in normal daylight is VG+. Completely flat with nice sheen and clean, clearly defined grooves throughout. Specifically, in normal daylight there is a 3 cm pencil thin scuff mark and a 4cm wispy hairline visible on side 1, both towards the vinyl edge. Neither of these are "feelable" and result in eight mild background clicks immediately preceding the commencement of the music on side 1. On side 2 there are two 1cm light scuff marks, again non-feelable, and three half centimetre light scratches which are visible (but not obvious), are feelable (just), and do result in eleven mild clicks towards the beginning of track 1, side 2 and four clicks early on in "A Day In The Life". Under a bright light, and when tilted at an angle, each side of the vinyl does reveal some further mild, surface only and occasional very light scuffing along with the occasional wispy hairline.
The labels are each excellent. The raised "K" and "T" tax codes are clearly visible on the side 1 label and there are just a few very faint spindle trails adjacent to each of the centre holes, otherwise excellent.
The iconic, laminated Garrod & Lofthouse outer gatefold sleeve is very good+. There is no scuffing or rubbing on any of the edges, including the spine, each of which remains nicely rigid. The opening edges also remain nicely defined with no fraying. There is some slight laminate lifting along with a 1-2cm diagonal surface crease at each of the bottom corners on the front side, just the hint of some very mild ring wear on the reverse side, a little creasing/compression on the reverse side bottom right corner, and the corners suffer from minimal scuffing. There is no creasing on the spine where all writing remains perfectly legible. The photographs, colours, and writing (lyrics) on each of the front and reverse sides remain in excellent condition : rich, vibrant, and great clarity. The inside of the gatefold is truly excellent...perfect, in fact, apart from a little compression/creasing at the foot of the centre fold. The flip backs at the top are perfect, and the inside photo of Ringo, John, Paul and George, along with the original vibrant colouring, is as good as the day this record was bought some 50 years ago! VG+, bordering on excellent.
The sought after cardboard cutout is pristine.
Finally, the quality of the audio is VG+. Nice tone and clarity with no distortion either at higher volume or higher frequency. There are the aforementioned 8 mild clicks right at the beginning of side 1, eleven mild clicks towards the beginning of track 1 side 2, the four clicks early on during "A Day In The Life" and I also noticed 3 mild background clicks during the intro to "Getting Better" but could not identify a reason for this. There is also just a little background crackle at the end of "A Day In The Life" - a professional clean may cure this. So, not perfect but apart from these blemishes the audio quality is excellent and this copy of Sgt Peppers still makes for a great listen.

Comes with original 1st press red and white psychedelic inner which is is excellent condition apart from a 6cm slit on the bottom seam and a further 4cm seam split in the middle of one of the sides. Note that I supply an additional plain white inner with every record that I sell to help minimise the risk of damage to the original inner (some of which are collectibles in their own right) as a matter of course.
A cherished 1st press copy of this classic album with minor blemishes but certainly good enough to grace any Beatles vinyl collection and still making for a great listen.

But inevitably opinions and descriptions are always prone to some subjectivity, and opinions and what constitutes "Near mint" or "Excellent" can sometimes differ. I always start my auctions at a low price to encourage bidding and in the knowledge that the market normally finds it's own level with the end price being indicative of the true market value of the item being advertised.
On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl cardboard mailer along with at least two cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint
Description: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
Excellent
Description: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good
Description: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Good
Description: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
Fair
Description: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
