Offered for auction is an acceptable 'second state' version of the (in)famous 'Butcher Sleeve' sleeve edition of Yesterday And Today, as released by Capitol USA.
The original release of Yesterday And Today featured a picture of the lads, dressed in butcher smocks, surrounded by chunks of meat and toy-baby body parts. Outcry from a variety of sources forced Capitol to recall the LP and reissue it with a new 'less likely to offend' slick that had the boys sitting on/standing around steamer trunks. Because a large number of the butcher-slick sleeves had already been printed by the time of the recall, Capitol made the decision to simply paste the new 'steamer' slick on top of the 'butcher' slick of the existing sleeve stock.
Popular terms have been coined to describe the various 'states' of a Burtcher sleeve:
- First state - describes a copy of the original 'recalled' issue i.e. no pasteover sleeve, and no remnants of a 'peel job'
- Second state - describes a copy with the 'steamer trunk' slick pasted over a 'butcher' slick
- Third state - describes a 'second state' sleeve which has had the 'steamer' slick peeled-off to reveal the 'butcher' slick
'Second state' sleeves are most often identified by a faintly-visible dark patch in the white area to the right of Ringo Starr's elbow. The dark patch is actually part of the butcher sleeve beneath (Ringo's black skivvy). I have attempted to illustrate this 'butcher tell' in one of the images, above, which compares three photoshopped versions of exactly the same part of the sleeve.
