The Beatles : With The Beatles 1N/1N 1st Mono Press 1963 w/Jobete credit

This first mono pressing plays with very impressive audio and there is not one tick, click or pop to be found.  There is only a little distortion here and there but it is minimal and not intrusive in my opinion.  It is what you expect to find on a mono record being played through a stereo system.  S1 is visually in great condition and S2 just has a little marking which does not impact on the audio quality.

For once the cover (with large Mono on the front) is in great condition with only very minimal shelf wear and the original Emitex inner is also very clean and has no splits.

This is a genuine first pressing as denoted by the incorrect Jobete credit for 'Money' on S2 and it has 'The Parlophone Co. Ltd...' around the perimeter edge and the 1N/1N matrix.  It of course also has 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' spelt incorrectly as 'Gotta' on the S2 label and the back cover.

The vinyl is in excellent condition with only minimal marking and it still has a very impressive glossy sheen.  There are no scratches on either side and S1 in particular is very impressive with only a small number of very faint hairlines that are not easy to locate.  S2 does have 3/4 hairline marks that are a little more visible and also a small area of mottling but this has no affect on the audio.  The run out grooves are very clean and the KT tax code can be seen on S1.  The labels have no marking or writing and not very much spindle wear either.

Play grading  

The run in on S1 is very quiet so you are expecting good things!  'It Won't Be Long' then plays with a clarity and power that is very impressive.  There is no interference and this is easily a Mint- start to the album.

'All I've Got To Do' has only a hint of very quiet static on the intro, about one second basically!  It then plays so clearly and you really notice the depth of the recording here.  Perhaps a touch of barely audible static in a couple of places so I will grade as Near Mint

From start to finish 'All My Loving' plays with wonderful clarity and definition.  In true Beatles style the vocals are recorded 'high' in the mix and yet they do not suffer from distortion at all despite me playing this mono record through a stereo set up.  A Mint- version in my opinion.

'Don't Bother Me' is of the same 'high end' standard with no intrusion on the audio.  Once more each note is so sharp and precise - not bad for a 58 year old record!  No ticks, clicks, pops or static this is another Mint- track.

'Little Child' plays loud and true throughout with no sign of any interference.  If there is any distortion it is so minor and totally non-intrusive.  It still deserves a Mint- grade I would say.

'Til There Was You' plays very clearly with only a minimal amount of very light background static.  You don't really notice it unless you actively seek it out if you understand what I mean.  There are no clicks or pops and Near Mint is an honest assessment of the audio.

Being the the final track you would expect 'Please Mister Postman' to have some inner groove distortion but this is definitely a very 'clean' version.  There is some distortion but much less than what you normally find and you don't have to turn the volume down which is a good sign.  Again no clicks or pops and a perfect fade out which shows just how good the clarity is here.  A very strong Near Mint- end to the side.

'Roll Over Beethoven' plays with tremendous power from the get go with hardly any distortion on Harrison's intro.  From then on there are no negatives and the sonic quality is stunning in every way.  Mint-

'Hold Me Tight' is very impressive although the audio is perhaps not quite as clear here.  Maybe that's more to do with it being played through a stereo system and there is certainly no interference.  Near Mint

'You Really Gotta Hold On Me' has no ticks, clicks or pops but every now and then you can detect a little static distortion.  It is infrequent and does not really intrude on the quality of the listen.  Ex+ is fair

You would think 'I Wanna Be Your Man' would exhibit the same 'background' but it plays with superb power and depth and no interference.  Mint-

'Devil In Her Heart' plays to a very similar standard although the percussion does sound a little more 'tinny' here.  There is no actual interference but I grade as Ex+ just to play it safe again.

'Not A Second Time' plays with very strong audio and again there is no 'background'.  There is a slightly 'muddy' sound perhaps so will grade as Ex+ but I honestly think I might be underselling it as perhaps this is just how it was recorded.

When you consider 'Money' is the final track on the side it still plays with very clear audio.  It is so often 'ruined' by a lot of distortion and whilst there is some here it is only minimal.  A strong finish and Ex+ is deserved.

In summary this very collectable first pressing plays to a superb standard with no ticks, clicks or pops and only a minimal amount of distortion which is not intrusive anyway.  There cannot be many 'Jobete' pressings that play as well as this.  Now fast approaching 60 years of age this would add to any collection.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The Patents Pending G&L cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  The edge and spine are in superb condition with no rubbing/marking and the corners are very clean also, just a little more wear top right.  The opening edge is very strong with no tears and has only very minimal handling wear.  The laminated front cover is in great shape with just a few faint laminate creases to the right of Paul and some of the usual crease lines around the edges.  The back cover is very clean when you consider it isn't laminated and has no marking as such, just a little fading down the left side.  The flipbacks remain firmly attached (how rare is that!) and there is only minimal staining on two of the edges - the right and bottom edge.  Overall though this is a fine example of this cover and Ex is entirely justified.

The original poly-lined Emitex inner is in great condition with no side splits, tears or marking and not very much creasing.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
