Label/Format: Parlophone – First Press stereo format with intense black matt labels that have the ‘Jobete’ credits for ‘Money’. The inside area of the inner ring ridge is textured. (Please see my label scan and picture).

Label Conditions: Both labels are in very impressive condition with only a very few ultra fine and faint spindle marks as seen under angled light. Finding this vintage, early stereo record so modestly used (and certainly NOT abused) is somewhat difficult. For the vast majority who bought this, most played them to near destruction on the most basic of record players that tracked as massive weight. Most found these days rendered unlistenable with dulled, badly marked and scratched surfaces. Labels swathed in multitudes of spindle marks, gouges and scrapes. Any other marks (non-spindle) or blemishes on these labels are very few, ultra fine and faint.

Cat Number: PCS 3045.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 151 grams. A very solid and thick record, so typical of the era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Few Beatles regular issue records are rare, they sold in astronomical numbers and have never been hard to find. That said, the first stereo pressings of this album with the ‘Jobete’ label credit for ‘Money’ are far harder to find. Few people owned stereo systems in 1963 and the vast majority of copies that sold initially were the mono version. Condition also is the paramount factor. Also with lesser worn or aged covers, most seen are very tatty, torn, written on, creased or very grubby. The flipbacks often ripped with ugly grime on their ends, edges split or held together with tape – we have all seen them – I leave them well alone. If I offer a Beatles album, it will be of a high standard with quality looks, and even more importantly, sound.

Brief Info: The band’s second album, most will be more than familiar with it – but noteworthy being a first issue in stereo making is considerably harder to find than later stereos and all monos.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges on to three huge external rear flipbacks. This has the large ‘stereo’ on the front and was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the early ‘Patents pending’ text as seen in close-up. Also included is the original tracing paper style lined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a fine shine and freshness, also clarity with no lifting of any real note and only very light and dulling around the rim that few will escape totally, this more as seen under angled light. Any real rim impression is very light indeed and with any surface marks few and very fine and light indeed. The main issue are some usual edge hairline type creases that again, few avoid and some large half moon surface creases near the right edge. These commonly seen here as the hand has to grip the sleeve to help in removal of the record. These are relatively few and only moderate but are seen, but finding one of these first stereo covers with no creasing is a monumental task and then premium prices will almost certainly apply.

Cover Back: The unprotected back is has darkened a little with age and has a little quite light discolour near the left entrance edge – all normal for a cover fast approaching 50 years old. This panel has very few marks and barely any creasing at all – no writing either – that was a very common practice at this time when records were regularly loaned out or taken to parties. All the flipbacks are solid and unlifted, they have naturally darkened a little but have clean ends with mimimal traces of any burring. The top one has a tiny end chip and none have any splits, tears or repairs. There are some creases, mainly to the spine flipback, mostly quite light but a couple can be deemed more moderate and these are on the spine edge as well. This is a cover and record that have been used, hence there are gentle clues to it’s genuine vintage. Of course some were kept in cotton wool, never used or played, but such examples are very rare and seldom seen or offered.

Top Edge: Barely any wear, straight and smooth to the fingertip, one fine surface crease only.

Bottom Edge: Very similar again with three fine surface creases and a rub on the right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp to sharp. The back with light thickening and mimimal burring – both guaranteed untrimmed. The laminate ends short of full width on the front. Record enters on this edge and these often get used so much they soften, feather and spread – not the case on this one.

Spine and Text: Overall solid but with two hairline cracks but straight with barely any compression, the ends very slightly tapered in manufacture, but this effect is negligible. The text is all present bar a tiny chip to the ‘t’ in the word ‘With’. All laminate retained with no peeling and still very clear, also retaining fine shine.

Corners: A small tip rub to the bottom right, little else bar the odd tiny tip crease. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine overall example of this much scarcer large stereo cover. Not for the perfectionist, but for those who do not mind being reminded of vintage, this is a very solid and still attractive example. Any wear modest and no real damage. It will please many collectors who do not wish to spend a king’s ranson on a near mint example, should one ever surface.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: the tracing-paper style inner sleeve is in supreme condition – always a great indicator for lack of vinyl usage too. These are quite fragile items and split and tear so easily. This one is clean and still fresh with two immaculate window circles and a near pristine lining without even a single crease or crinkle. The paper devoid of creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. The top opening is incredibly crisp and this is one of the very best I have ever seen. I know it’s only an inner, but so nice to see these delicate ones looking like this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: no hesitation in grading this first issue stereo thus. This for a massively popular Beatles albums this incredible age – few fair this well and a high percentage simply were written-off by usage with blunt, worn old stylus that were never replaced when needed or ever aligned for safe tracking. This a lovely visual copy that is very clean with a fine shine and freshness. Intense black and a very solid pressing. Any surface marks are few and light, fine and faint as mostly seen critically under light. A few very fine hairlines and surface traces are nigh-on impossible to avoid of a copy that has been played even a few times. There are NO penetrating scratches on these playing surfaces at all, this really does look impressive compared to so many seen. Both playing surfaces and the lack of marks on the labels simply reinforces the evidence of very low usage, and then when so, with more than reasonable due care. We all know what state this, and similar age popular records are usually found in – played to near destruction with multitudes of surface marks, deep penetrating scratches, dulled surfaces covered in mucky fingermarks – chalk and cheese – this has NOTHING like that all. Purely superfical minor, faint, and in context, very few blemishes at all. Visually a splendid example that will please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This high-quality stereo early-cut record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound – never take this for granted on any record this vast age – whether in mono or stereo. Even pristine looking copies can hide dreaded distortion caused by a blunt or chipped stylus, the curse of any old record. Here, the frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A very forward, loud and dynamic recording, this simply sounds stunning with any surface sounds barely even registering and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The lack of crackle is refreshing and even the more critical songs play focused and clear. Being ultra critical, the merest hint of wear on ‘Pkease Mr Postman’, but I am being beyond critical, and this being played on an immensely revealing and critical Linn LP12 turntable. Hearing such pieces that can still offer such impressive and clean sound is almost remarkable initself. Very few available copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. No needle drops or jolts have scarred or ruined this very well preserved copy. I can hardly reitterate enough that only small percentage of Beatles and beat-pop albums of this era survive quite this little used and unabused. Most are tired, well played copies that were enjoyed a multitude of times and now rendered unlistenable on modern, ultra revealing stereo equipment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, one of the very best of the early-era Beatles albums. The real stereo mix offers a very different presentation of the music and is certainly less heard on the originals. This was very much the mono era and few had stereo record players until more towards the end of the decade. This record, cover, and even the inner sleeve will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. As already stated, not for the perfectionist, but this record will take a fair degree of beating and I really enjoyed it. Bring back the early sound of the Fab Four with this impressive and very enjoyable set.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
