Label/Format: Parlophone – intense black matt surfaces with a very gentle hint of texturing. Side two has the embossed ‘K T’ purchase tax codes, both letters are unworn, so-much-so, they are not even that easy to see. This is the recognised 1963 second pressing format with the Dominion, Belinda credit for ‘Money’. All details as seen on the pictures.

Label Conditions: Both in exceptional condition with possibly the least spindle marks I have ever seen on a vintage Beatles album, just a couple or three which is little short of remarkable for one of the most popular albums ever issued. Both are very clean, fresh and attractive with no wear around the hole area. Beatles albums from this early period are seldom seen with much less evidence of usage. This record is truly superb and appears hardly played, this reiterated by supreme playing surfaces and beautiful, crisp sound quality.

Rarity: Few standard issue Beatles are rare, they sold in vast numbers. But clearly the very early stereo copies will always be harder to find – few would have owned stereo record players at this time where the format was still in its relative infancy. And condition is always a huge factor – the world’s most popular band, Beatles record were most often heavily played, often to near destruction on the most basic of record players. This beautiful, far more elusive stereo copy appears hardly played, or even handled. It looks fantastic and sounds the same, such copies seldom surface these days. For a very popular record now around 52-years-old, this looks hardly run-in in vinyl terms and is of archive quality. A delight to play-grade, I doubt if this has seen light-of-day for decades. With so many Beatles albums seen, barely worthy of a second look, this is a truly exceptional record that should delight purist collectors, fans and audiophiles.

Brief Info: The second UK Beatles album, with advance orders and sales, pressing companies could hardly keep up with demand. But, and a major ‘but’, most sold were in mono, the format probably 95% of people would have chosen at this time. How many people, especially the younger generation, would have owned expensive and new stereo technology at this time? This copy a beautiful ‘second press’ issue in stereo, appearing hardly even played and offering little short of pristine sound – even the very loud and dynamic final song ‘Money’ plays without issues. A joy from the second the stylus makes contact to the time it is finally lifted. The cover is nice, but the back has a little edge scuffing and a tiny surface tear (more detail further down), so that is not for absolute purists. But the record is gorgeous and that could prove a massive upgrade for collectors. With so many of these vintage classics seen in horrendous condition, this one can truly be described as exceptional, and it will take a remarkable record to ever beat this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): this being very cautious for a little scuffing on the back, this actually looks a whole lot better for more of its area. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back on three external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. The front has the large ‘stereo’ text as used on the first issue examples as seen. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. Originals include the heavyweight polylined inner sleeve. Note: the back cover track listing includes the incorrect spelling of the song ‘You Really Gotta Hold On Me’ (later corrected), which now is correctly listed as ‘You Really Got a Hold On Me’ on the label.

Lamination & Front: Clean, fresh and attractive with very shiny, clear laminate with minimal traces of dulling. Just a couple of gentle, small lifts and traces near the bottom left corner, that apart, adhesion is superb. Also few creases and barely any away from the sides, most are confined to the edges, mostly the spine as fine hairline types that few can hope to escape totally. A vintage cover front that retains genuine freshness and hardly aged. One to hold and enjoy, most bar absolute perfectionists should appreciate this classic Beatles original cover front.

Cover Back: Firstly, the issues: there are a couple of small surface pull-tears near the top right corner area within the rounded corner text box. Almost certainly a vintage retailer’s sticker that has been removed at some time in the past. Records sold in the 1960s especially often had promotional or advertising stickers applied by shops – we have all seen them. Also the top right side adjacent to the flipback edge has rubbed with light surface scuffing, hardly major or serious, but clearly not a cover for absolute purists of connoisseur fans – the record itself however is major ‘compensation’. These issues apart, the main exposed card panel is very impressive with minimal traces of any discolouration, toning, any grubbiness gentle and very light, clearly cover-protected for most of its time. As stated above, this includes the incorrect spelling of track four, side two (‘You Really Gotta Hold On Me’ – later corrected to ‘You Really Got a Hold On Me’). No other rubbing, ring wear or even record impression, just one super fine semi-crease near the top left edge on the main card. All three flipbacks are still generally white and clean with minimal hint of the usual yellowing or toning, even the laminate end areas. No lifting or burring, all solid and attractive without the grubbiness most seem to acquire. During the 1960s, smoking was particular popular and left its affects on covers like this – well no nicotine has been near this one – it even smells fresh and unaged. As per usual, a few, mostly fine hairline type creases on the flipback laminate (one moderate towards the spine edge top), but now many can hope to avoid these as the barest minimum? Overall this back gives few clues to age and more than compliments the highly attractive front – but a couple of smallish issues that will not be for all.

Top Edge: Smoothly laminated and with no chips or scuffs, still very white and mainly straight.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This storage edge is clean, quite sharp with little real wear. Any thickening or burring light as seen viewed end-on, but this has a more ‘rustic’ trim and not razor sharp by any means, this not unusual on thicker than average card. This edge is totally natural, guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with minimal compression, the ends very gently tapered in manufacture, this quite subtle. A couple of fine hairline type creases hardly register. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate as seen. For good measure, this is well centred, just a fraction high being critical.

Corners: Minimal hint of tip wear with mainly excellent shape retained with no bashes or minimal dink traces.

Cover Summary: Overall a strong and generally age-defying original all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, yes a couple of issues on the back, but one that could still prove difficult to find much better. Unusually clean and fresh with no writing, and stereo covers are far less abundant than the mono version. This still attractive item should please many collectors, but as stated already, not for the highly discerning who only want ‘perfection’ at any cost.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this in terms of lack of wear, but this has darkened a little, that apart, little else to fault. Beatles albums from this period initially had the polylined inners, these early ones were heavier and almost robust compared to later ones. This one has two immaculate crisp undamaged window circles, the lining intact and solid with only a minor thin scuff line. The main paper hardly creased, and even the recessed wave-style top opening crisp and mainly sharp – all good indicators the record has not been removed many times. All edges unsplit with no repairs, it includes the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text – these are seldom a great deal better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) and as close to my full MINT(–) grading as they get for me, especially for a record this great age and popularity. A truly impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played, and then with utmost care, no damaging worn stylus have been inflicted on this sublime record. Any visual surface traces bordering on minuscule, even as viewed critically under bright angled light. Any hints or traces even finer than hairlines and look at those complex, super-clean grooves on my pictures. Quite honestly, viewed in normal room light, these record surfaces almost remind of new, there is not a single stylus scratch or mark on this hardly run-in stereo record. Simply compare to most seen these days, battered, worn-out, scratched and grubby examples only really fit for the skip – this is visually a stunning example that should please most-all collectors – only one in many hundred will still remain in such wonderful condition.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Beatles dream-piece album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault – this was a pure joy from beginning to end with flawless audio reproduction. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is fantastic with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. That includes the incredibly challenging final song ‘Money’, that is recorded loud and very full-on. This is a track that so often gives major issues in terms of clarity and distortion – sometimes described as being normal due to the master tape. Well that is nonsense, this song, like all others when not worn or abused, sounds simply stunning – as it does on this copy. The vocals are all clear, precise and fully focused with no break up of the intense sound. Incredible separation and imagery on this stereo pressing as well, this ‘difficult’ final song is little short of perfect, and this being played on very revealing equipment. Another wonderful production from George Martin – this is how the band and him wanted their records to sound. This is the real thing, no digital enhancements or remastering required, this simply takes you back to when it was first purchased. An exceptional clean pressing, no wear, no sound degrading and no tracking issues* – and by Beatles standards, this has very low stampers – how many 1 R’s will surface? Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this still early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, the stereo mix impressive and clear. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful copy. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and has massive upgrade potential, the record in particular merits my highest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
