Thirty years of collecting vinyl is finally taking its toll on my living space.

Sleeve

Surprisingly extremely well preserved sleeve considering it is about 54 years old. The laminated front cover is clean, no names, no stickers, no discolouring. The laminate surface is in excellent shape, with no signs of lifting or peeling. No rips or tears. Very mild creasing.

The back cover is also looking fine. Some very minor marks, the colour remains well, often you see very browned back panels, this cover has got mild signs of age, but is generally white still. The sleeve is made by Garrod and Lofthouse, and has the Patents pending text. There is a small pen mark near the top where a name has been written then crossed out.

The side are all in terrific condition. No real signs or edge wear, no splits. The spine is solid , some minor creases, and four little splits in the laminate surface. The text is all clear and visible. The spine does look really good. The opening edge is very flat, no rips no tears. There is some minor softening to the edge, but no major feathering.

The corners are in really good shape too. Each has some rubbing to the tips as can been seen in the pictures. But for it’s age I’m pleasantly surprised by the condition.

What else? It has the large MONO font, and the misspelled track title “You really GOTTA hold on me” is there. This was corrected in later pressings to “You really GOT A hold on me”. I satisfied that this cover is a great example for this pressing. I’m grading it excellent minus.

Inner sleeve

Correct poly lined “Emitex”  sleeve which is in excellent condition. No writing, sticker, stains. Mild creasing and no splits. I will be providing a plain white inner along with this as additional protection during shipping.

Labels

Early slightly textured labels. Rim text states ‘ The Parlophone Recording co” Later copies would have “The Gramophone..”. MKT tax code near spindle hole. “ Recording first published” Text. No “Sold in the UK text”.

“Money” has the early Jobette credit, that was changed on later pressings to “Dominion” .

Both labels are in good clean condition. No names, no stickers. Some spindle marks are present on both sides. Centre hole has mild wear, but just the early signs of. It does not look worn out from overplaying this record. I’m grading both labels as excellent.

Stamper/ matrix info

This copy has the earliest 1N prefix at the end of the matrix numbers on both sides. Second pressing have a 2N prefix.

Side one audio grade

Ok, I’m writing this up as I play the same through, start to finish. Starting off we have “ It won’t be long” . Sounding very fresh, the audio is sounding pretty fresh. No hint of groove wear which is a great start. The high end has retained its sharpness with virtually no degradation to high frequencies. The space between tracks has very little crackle though I did hear a low series of clicks for about four revolves. They fade as they progress, the final very low click can be heard in the first line of “ All I’ve got to do” then it goes away. This track is sounding very crisp and clear, being a quieter track some pressings can be plagued by annoying background crackle, not with this pressing, even when the track fades out it is sounding clean. “ All my loving” is still sounding fresh, often an overplayed track with high end distortion from wear, this is not the case here, the high end remains clear and sharp. There is some minor crackle between track, it really is very low, but I mention it for accuracy. “Don’t bother me” is sounding dark and broody, crisp and really good sounding audio. You really can make out all the background instrumentation. “ Little child” picks up the pace again. Sounding good through. A couple of low pops between tracks. “Til there was you” quite amazingly has no background crackle. This track has some distortion in the high end, I believe that is the kind of distortion you commonly find on older recordings, and is more to do with the recording techniques at the time rather from wear on the grooves. “Mr Postman” Is sounding on top form, and a pleasing sounding end to a great side. A very listenable side with little sign of aging. I’m going to give this side a grade of very good.

Side one visual grade

This side has retained a good sheen. It does has some light marks in places. And about 12 obvious scratches and scuff. Of the scratches most are light to medium, but there are some harder looking marks too. If any of these affect play, then I will have mentioned it above in this sides audio grading.

Side two audio grade

“Roll over Beethoven” starts the side off. No significant background noise, nice clean sounding track. Hold me tight is also sounding good. You really hear significant differences between Mono and Stereo pressings of the Beatle’s albums. Great separation of the vocals and instruments. So far there has been sign of any deterioration in the sound quality. The side doesn’t sound overplayed in any way. Very little noise between the tracks, which is great. “You really gotta hold on me” sounds fab. Up to this point none of the marks have turned up audibly. Even the higher ranges of the vocals show no breaking up of the sound quality which can also be a problem if an lp has been overplayed, the high end sounds sharp. I did hear some very low crackle between tracks here. By the time “I wanna be your man” starts it was gone. This is another track that you often find sounding overplayed, not with this copy, there is no distortion on the high-end instruments or vocals. Right at the very end, on the last line before the silent gap I heard three low clicks. These have stopped by the time “Devil in her heart” has started. Now in the line “ She’ll never hurt me” the tracks jumps, a smooth jump to “ she’s an angel sent to me”. There is no loud noise at that moment that accompanies said jump. I can see some visible wear just at that portion of the groove. I didn’t have to get up and move the stylus along, the tracks plays through. “Not a second time” is another great sounding track. I just heard one very faint pop near the end” this was muffled and not loud or sharp. “Money” is the last track on this side and plays perfectly. Over all this has been a very listenable side with surprisingly good audio. I’m grading it as very good minus mostly due to the jump I heard. Had that not occurred the grade would easily be higher.

Side two visual grade

Again another glossy side. Fewer marks than on side one. There are some fine marks and some medium weight scratches. Again, if any show up during the play back of the album I’ll let you know above.

 Final thoughts

This copy has all the credentials of a first pressing of this classic album. A very decently preserved sleeve, and the audio is generally of a very high standard. The vinyl is marked, not trashed however. I think that the playback quality stands as a testament to the quality of early vinyl. This is not a final upgrade, nor is it just a filler. I found it to be very listenable and I can hear it has plenty of life in it.

GRADING

I use the U.K Rare Record Guide grading system detailed below.

MINT The LP or single is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT The LP or single shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD The LP or single has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and an occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover and contents without any major defects.

GOOD The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

POSTAGE

All records come with a protective poly sleeve, and new white inner. Records are shipped outside of the sleeve within reinforced cardboard packaging to ensure safety during transit.
