Description

The Beatles : Yellow Submarine 1/1 1st Stereo Press

This first stereo pressing plays to a very high standard with barely any intrusion on the audio other than a little distortion towards the end of S1 which is common.  This is also one of the earliest first pressings to be produced as denoted by the single stampers on each side.  'R' on S1 and 'P' on S2!

The vinyl is visually in superb condition and the cover is one of the finest examples I have ever seen.  It is so clean with no obvious wear at all.

The first press has 'Sold in U.K. subject to...' text on the labels and the 1/1 matrix.  The cover has the red lines on the back and no 'Printed and Made by G&L Ltd' info on the flipbacks.

PCS 7070 // YEX 715 - 1 / YEX 716 - 1 // R 1 / P 1

The audio on S1 is Mint- (Track 4 Near Mint / Tracks 5 & 6 Ex+)

The audio on S2 is Near Mint (Mint- for the majority)

The cover is Near Mint-

The labels are Near Mint-

The original black inner sleeve is Near Mint

 Visual grading

This is a great example of this first pressing and it still has a lovely glossy sheen for its age.  There are no scratches and only a handful of very faint sleeve removal hairlines.  S2 has some very minor mottling but is difficult to spot as it is so faint.  It has not been overplayed judging by the audio quality and the fact that there is not too much spindle wear.  The run out grooves and labels are also very clean with no marking.

Play grading

From the very first note 'Yellow Submarine' plays with wonderful clarity and continues in exactly the same way with no intrusion on the audio at all.  With only a couple of barely audible ticks the audio is so 'clean' and each note plays with stunning precision.  The long fade out also has no 'background' other than a faint hiss right at the very end.    This is a stunning Mint- start to the album.

I am pleased to say 'Only A Northern Song' is of the same 'high end' standard.  There is so much going on musically with this track and yet the clarity is very impressive throughout with no distortion at all.  There is no interference, another perfect fade out also.  I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint- again.

'All Together Now' maintains this impeccable standard with 'as new' audio.  No clicks, pops, static or crackle just pure Mint-quality from the first note to the last.

'Hey Bulldog' is another example of a vinyl only lightly played down the years.  There is no interference although there is perhaps just a hint of minor distortion.  It is very minimal and not intrusive and Near Mint is a fair grade.

The high octane intro on 'It's All Too Much' plays superbly and then plays with some distortion on the top end.  This is a common feature on this track and should not be downgraded as such.  It may even be due to the way it was recorded - do not get me wrong it still plays extremely well and there are no clicks or pops etc.  However, I will grade as Ex+ just to be cautious.   The fade out has no 'background' whatsoever.

'All You Need Is Love' is similar in that there is a little inner groove distortion on the vocal.  The actual music plays very clearly indeed with no intrusion again no clicks or pops.  A very respectable Ex+ version to end the side.

------------------------------------------------------------------

'Pepperland' for the vast majority is 'as new' with stunning clarity and definition.  There are a couple of momentary crackle sounds but overall you could not wish for a more impressive opening 'track'.  Near Mint I would say.

The remaining orchestral tracks on the side play with great precision when you consider how many quiet sections there are.  I have played every second of S2 so as to provide a comprehensive grading and there are no clicks or pops at all.  With only a couple of gentle ticks and the bare minimum of mega light static the audio from start to finish is superb.  It is no exaggeration to say the majority is 'as new' and any collector would be hugely impressed by the stunning clarity on offer here.  'Yellow Submarine In Pepperland' ends the album in sublime style with superb audio - there is so much to like here!  It would be difficult to find a better S2!

In summary this very collectable first pressing plays with stunning quality and whilst there is a little distortion at the end of S1 it does not detract from what is a very clean record.  Now over 50 years old the clarity is so impressive and S2 in particular is stunning.  This record has been very well looked after down the years and the same applies to the cover (with red lines).  I don't think I've seen a better example.

The Cover

This is a stunning example of this laminated G & L cover.  As it is a first pressing it of course has the 'red lines' on the back and the flipbacks do not have the 'Printed and Made by...' information on them.  The edges and thin pinched spine look untouched and are in perfect condition and the corners are also very clean with hardly any wear, just a tiny amount on the bottom right one.  The opening edge again is near perfect with barely any wear and the laminated front cover has no marking at all.  It is incredibly clean and the only wear, if you can call it that, are a handful of very small creases around the edges.  The back cover is also in superb order with no marking as such, just a little fading/yellowing running down the side of the opening edge and a couple of minor spots.  The 'white' background has retained its colour so well and the flipbacks are also in lovely condition and remain firmly in place with only minimal staining on the edges.  It does not get much better than this!  This is one of the finest 'Yellow Submarine' original covers I have seen and would impress any avid Beatles' collector!  It grades as Near Mint- in my opinion.

The Labels

The iconic Apple labels have no marking or writing and have retained their original colour.  They are in superb condition with not very much spindle wear as previously mentioned.

The Inner Sleeve

The original black die-cut inner sleeve is in fantastic shape and has no side splits or tears which makes a change!  It has no marking and almost zero creasing.
