Description

The Beatles : Yellow Submarine 1st Stereo Press (Red Lines on Cover)

This is about as good as it gets!  This stunning first press plays to a standard that is so rarely found today and the vinyl is also in beautiful condition.  It looks 'as new'!

The original cover with the red lines on the back could well be the finest example I have seen.  It is so clean and has very little shelf wear.  A stunning G & L version.

A first pressing is determined by the 1/1 matrix and also by the 'Sold in U.K. subject to resale price...' info on the labels.

 Visual grading

This vinyl is by far the most stunning 'Yellow Submarine' I have ever seen and it is a genuine first press!  You would be forgiven for thinking it was new as it has such an immaculate mirror-like glossy sheen with no marks or scratches of any kind.  I looked for a long time and all I could detect was one mega tiny faint hairline on S1 and that's it!  This has been so well preserved and the fantastic quality of the audio reflects that.  What a stunner!  The run out grooves are supremely clean as are the labels which only have a little spindle wear on S1.  Nothing on S2!

Play grading

The lead in grooves on S1 are so 'clean' and have no static which is rare for a Beatles' first press from the 60s!  The classic 'Yellow Submarine' then plays with stunning clarity and no interference of any kind.  This is clearly a vinyl that has been so well looked after and hardly played.  Each note can be heard with impeccable precision.  It is just immaculate!  There is not even a dust tick let alone anything worse and the fade out also plays perfectly.  An amazing Mint- start for certain.

With complete silence in the dead wax the Hammond organ intro on 'Only A Northern Song' provides a perfect start to the track.  As Harrison's vocal begins there is no decrease in quality and continues in the same way.  With its somewhat chaotic instrumentation the playback cannot be faulted and again there are no clicks, pops, static or crackle.  Another stunning version.

The acoustic intro on 'All Together Now' is as 'fresh' as the day when first released in '69 and the remainder does not disappoint either.  It plays with great clarity and depth from start to finish and with no interference.

'Hey Bulldog' is of the same 'high end' standard and plays with a definite power and definition.  I find this track always has what sounds like inner groove distortion but I'm sure that's just the way it was recorded.  The audio remains very impressive and again....not one iota of interference.

'It's All Too Much' has a mega powerful intro with no 'background' and then plays with wonderful clarity and power.  Again there is so much 'going on' with this track and yet there is no interference whatsoever.  The long fade out plays perfectly with not even a dust tick giving you an idea of the stunning clarity on offer here.

'All You Need Is Love' plays with superb audio but as per so many records from this era the 'final track' on the side does have some inner groove distortion.  This is unavoidable and should not be downgraded in a way.  It still plays with exceptionally well and the only 'background' is one faint click on the fade out, the first on the album!

------------------------------------------------------------------

There is no need to individually grade each orchestrated piece but I will still give a comprehensive grading.  Firstly I will say that the audio is stunning and I have never heard clarity such as this on a genuine first press.  The side begins with a super clean intro and only a couple of minor dust ticks and 'Pepperland' then plays with incredible clarity and barely any static.  From then on every track continues to play with sublime audio and it was a real pleasure to listen to!  With so many quiet sections you would expect some interference but there is hardly any and quite honestly the clarity is astounding!  There is no intrusive static and the only obvious interference are a couple of clicks on 'Sea Of Monsters'.  I cannot see what is causing them as the record is pristine so may just be one of those 'quirks' that you often find with vinyl!  In spite of that I cannot put into words just how phenomenal the audio quality is and it is no exaggeration to say the vast majority is 'as new', almost all of it in other words!  'Yellow Submarine In Pepperland' ends the album with incredible clarity and depth and nowhere is this more obvious than on the super quiet drum roll intro.  As the volume increases towards the end there is no distortion and is another Mint track.

In summary I will firstly say that it is obvious that not only has this first press been very well preserved over the last 50 years but it has only been lightly played also.  The clarity on both sides confirms that and in all my years of collecting and selling I have never seen or heard a first pressing as impressive as this.  The cover is also in wonderful condition with hardly any wear and remains beautifully clean.

The Cover

The G & L cover is one of the cleanest I have seen and the edges and thin pinched spine have no shelf wear whatsoever.  The top left corner has only one small crease and the other three are extremely clean with no real wear.  The opening edge just has a very small amount of 'feathering'.  The laminated front cover is very clean with no marking and has a few small creases around the edges that you often see and also a couple of minor creases near the bottom right corner.  The laminate itself is in great order with no splits or lifting.  The 'white' back cover (with red lines) is so often marked but I am pleased to say this is beautifully clean with only one very faint rub mark top left.  The flipbacks are in superb condition with no staining and that is just so rare!  I'm not sure I've seen better on a first press cover.  A fantastic example without doubt and is just a shade off being Near Mint really.

The Labels

The 'Apple' labels are in superb condition with no marking or writing and only a little spindle wear on S1 and nothing on S2!  They have lost none of their original colour.

The Inner Sleeve

The original plain white die-cut inner is in great shape with no splits or tears and no marking either.  There is also very little creasing.
