YELLOW SUBMARINE
"Yellow Submarine" by the Beatles was recorded in 1966 during their "Revolver" sessions. It is issued as a double A-side single, paired with "Eleanor Rigby". Written as a children's song by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, it was drummer Ringo Starr's vocal spot on the album. The single went to number one on charts in the United Kingdom and several other European countries, and in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It won an Ivor Novello Award for the highest certified sales of any single written by a British songwriter and issued in the UK in 1966. In the US, the song peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The Beatles recorded "Yellow Submarine" during a period characterised by experimentation in the recording studio. After taping the basic track and vocals in late May 1966, they held a session to overdub nautical sound effects, party ambience and chorus singing, recalling producer George Martin's previous work with members of the Goons. As a novelty song coupled with "Eleanor Rigby", a track devoid of any rock instrumentation, the single marked a radical departure for the group. It was also the first time they had issued a single in the UK consisting of album tracks. The song inspired the 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine and appeared as the opening track on the accompanying soundtrack album.
In the US, "Yellow Submarine"'s release coincided with the controversies surrounding Lennon's "More popular than Jesus" remarks, and the band's public opposition to the Vietnam War, which led some radio stations to impose a ban on the Beatles' music
ELEANOR RIGBY
Simultaneously released on 5 August 1966 as a double A-side single with "Yellow Submarine", "Eleanor Rigby" spent four weeks at number one on the British charts. In the United States, where each side of a single was eligible to chart, the song peaked at number 11 and "Yellow Submarine" reached number 2.
"Eleanor Rigby" won the 1966 Grammy for Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance, Male or Female for Paul McCartney.
It is the second song to appear in the Beatles' 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine. The first is "Yellow Submarine"; it and "Eleanor Rigby" are the only songs in the film which the animated Beatles are not seen to be singing. "Eleanor Rigby" is introduced just before the Liverpool sequence of the film; its poignancy ties in quite well with Ringo Starr (the first member of the group to encounter the submarine), who is represented as quietly bored and depressed. "Compared with my life, Eleanor Rigby's was a gay, mad world."
The song continued the transformation of the Beatles from a mainly rock and roll- and pop-oriented act to a more experimental, studio-based band. With a double string quartet arrangement by George Martin and lyrics providing a narrative on loneliness, "Eleanor Rigby" broke sharply with popular music conventions, both musically and lyrically and the band singing about the neglected concerns and fates of the elderly. The song was just one example of why the Beatles' appeal reached so far beyond the traditional rock audience.
