THE BEATLES, YESTERDAY & TODAY (VEE-JAY LABEL VJLP 1311)
Did you ever wonder what the Beatles US records might have looked like if Chicago based Vee-Jay Records had kept the rights to release their records? After all, the original contract signed by Vee-Jay and Brian Epstein gave the label exclusive rights to release Beatles material in the USA for a period of 5 years starting in early 1963.
After the failure of the first two singles the label issued (Please Please Me in February 1963 and From Me To You in May 1963), Vee-Jay neglected to pay the miniscule royalties earned for the almost non-existent sales of those records. This later enabled Epstein to claim breach of contract and for Capitol Records to re-claim the distribution rights. So, if Vee-Jay had paid the small royalty bill in 1963, they would have owned the rights to all Beatles music until early 1968.
A decade ago, as a novelty/limited release, some Beatles records were pressed with Vee-Jay sleeves to commemorate the re-launch of Vee-Jay label. This one, ‘Yesterday & Today’ (VJLP 1311) is in near mint condition. Please note that while the sleeve of this item is Vee-Jay branded, the vinyl record is manufactured by EMI.
