Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks. This very early stereo pressing has clearly been little played, reitterated by stunning sound quality.

Cat Number: PCS 7070.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. At or around average for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: As I always state, few standard UK issued Beatles are rare with the exceptions of the early stereos and to a lesser degree, the late monos. The mono copy of this album is scarcer than the stereo but is not a real mono recording, but a ‘mixdown’ of the stereo issue, so the sound and details are pretty much the same but just presented in a different way. Conditions and the earlier pressings are a major factor for the very popular album’s ‘rarity’. Most are seen played into oblivion with very tatty covers and badly scratched records. No band on earth were more popular or sold more than The Beatles so when ultra clean, lightly played records show they are to be cherished and indeed are considerably harder to find.

Brief Info: The movie was animated and very psychedelic – the album features wonderful Beatles songs on side one – side two is the original film score which was composed and orchestrated by George Martin, this side I feel so vastly under-appreciated. The six Beatles songs are superb, all will know the title song of course. I have heard several copies of this one where the pressing quality is somewhat variable especially on the orchestrated side, often as later pressings but this incredible original stereo copy does full justice to this famous work. The cover has the correct PCS 7070 number and those two red bands on the back which were soon dropped. A very fine all-round copy with a modestly aged cover and an ultra clean, superb sounding record. The immensely fragile black unlined inner is fully intact but has corner creases. The truth is, many deliberately folded in the corners to a) stop the record falling out accidentally and b) to try to stop dust creeping inside the cover on to the record. A member distinct in the past, many shop sellers used to fold in the corners too so this is hardly unusual. So not a pristine copy for the connoisseur Beatles collector, but a mighty fine one that most collectors will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: A very strong and attractive Excellent cover. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, it has the noteworthy red lines on the back.

Lamination & Front: Lovely psychedelic cartoon artwork that most-all will be more than familiar with. The laminate retains a very fine shine and clarity with any marks few and minor. All is solidly adhered with no lifting of blistering and any friction rubs or dulling is modestly light and faint. Under light, the record’s rim outline is seen and few avoid that at least. There are several edge hairline creases but any away from the sides are few and very light indeed and little spoils the appearance of the famous Beatles album cover.

Cover Back: The back as aged very modestly and many would feel just-right for a 42-year-old cover. The main unprotected back panel is still a strong shade of white with any darkening or grubbiness very light indeed, mild traces, as per usual near the left opening edge. This panel has no creasing or ringwear or any real rubbing and does look attractive. The three flipbacks are solid and only lightly darkened with age, the ends are near burr and grime-line free with just minor surface scuffs to the top one’s edge near the centre, this being only modest but represents the only small issue as such.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn up to the very tips that have small surface rubs.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compressions mild and very few, all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. One fine hairline crease only just right of centre and missing the text entirely.

Corners: Three of the four are in superb condition with little to fault. The fourth being the bottom right that has a small tip chip or rub. Fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: Not pristine but how many offered ever are?, with just a few clues to it’s immense (and popularity), this very early ‘Yellow Submarine’ cover sets a very high standard and should please many, if not most collectors (but not quite the perfectionists).

The Inner: An immensely fragile soft paper inner that was massively prone to tearing and wooliness. This was not lined and is rarely seen devoid of major edge splits and a tatty window. This is made with very soft, matt paper, the same type found in the ‘White Album’ and some other Apple albums so beware of similiar black inners being substituted. Unusually, this is fully intact and has a neat window, just the one on this design. In terms of wear, this is worthy of a near excellent grading, but the corners have been folded as explained further up. Finding this inner with no creasing is a near impossible task and knowing how to mark-down one that has some is almost folly. Just nice to see this is not falling apart and remains untorn or split, I consider that a major bonus initself.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Side One probably undergraded at EX+ and Side Two EX++ and as often little played. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed with any visual blemishes being few and mostly very faint with no effect on sound. Just one exception, a modest paper type scuff on side one can be seen without having to tilt to light to any degree, but this too is purely superficial and has no sound. In Beatles’ terms, this is very lightly played on all the evidence and almost certainly the cleanest, least played stereo original copy of this album I have ever had and a very early-pressed one too, confirmed by all the matrix details above. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most realistic collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarcer early-pressed stereo record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault of any real note. Even though side two – the orchestral side – looks hardly played, that never means perfect sound, far from it. I have heard several of those that disappoint badly, often with surface noise and crackle and I truly consider this one of the hardest Beatles titles to find that offers top audio quality. Complex orchestral music and the associated jagged and finer grooves, are even more intolerant of heavy stylus abuse from early equipment, hence just one or two plays can almost make them sound unlistenable. Only a full-play grade will confirm fine sound, guess-work offers nothing, groovewear and distortion is the hidden peril of the grammophone record. This early cut copy has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Side two is fragile: just think of those super-heavyweight old thick needles dragging themselves across this fragile recording. The details and dynamics of the earliest pressings will amaze anyone who has yet to experience it - still the choice of so many Beatles fans. As a note: this was the last Fab Four album issued on the mono channel format but was NOT a true mono cut but a mix-down from the stereo. Any surface sounds on this copy are minimal indeed and silence on the ultra quiet orchestral side is nearly impossible to achieve but this is as good as it can almost get I feel. Few copies will match or outperform this very pressing significantly I feel certain, and that’s in mono or stereo, both are delicate. The ‘Beatles’ side plays with stunning clean sound and was a real joy. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled for it’s 40+ years. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended to most collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
