Biography:

The Bad Seeds were formed after the disbandment of the Australians Nick Cave's and Mick Harvey's former band The Birthday Party in 1983. It was in fact Harvey who suggested to Cave that they form a new band. The Birthday Party had split because of heavy drug use but also artistic differences between Cave and Rowland S. Howard. Harvey remained on Cave's side so to say, and wanted to continue co-operation. They were joined by Blixa Bargeld of the German industrial rock band Einstürzende Neubauten, British bassist Barry Adamson (formerly of Magazine) and Australian guitarist Hugo Race. Cave's girlfriend of the time Anita Lane also took part in the songwriting.

Early on the band operated in the gothic atmosphere of West Berlin, something perhaps reflected in their debut album From Her to Eternity and its followers. The album showed a more poetic side to Cave than the one who sang for The Birthday Party - songs such as A Box for Black Paul and Saint Huck were more focused in their storytelling than the simpler rock 'n roll aesthetics of his former band. Cave's change as a lyricist was evident as he also started working on his debut novel And the Ass Saw the Angel the same year. The book and the Bad Seeds' lyrics also interlink at times.

While in Berlin the band finished their next four albums, which all moved slightly towards a more elegant acoustic song writing, in contrast to the noise and chaos of the beginning of the band's career. It was at this point that the band's line-up began to vary, and nowadays Cave, Harvey and Bargeld are considered "the original members". The last of "the Berlin albums", Tender Prey, featured The Mercy Seat, a song which become one of Cave's signature tunes. Many consider it both lyrically and musically a great representation of Cave's song writing: the lyrics deal with a convicts confession before his execution and use much religious imagery typical to Cave. The music uses chaotic noise from all of the instruments, but also a haunting effect created by a string section. Many live versions of the song are greatly different from the studio version, and the song's interpretation possibilities perhaps explain why Cave and the band haven't become bored of the song even though they've played it at most of their shows since 1989.

After the release of Tender Prey Cave moved to São Paulo, Brazil. It was there where the band's real transitional album, The Good Son, was recorded. It was largely acoustic and its themes were arguably more positive than those of Cave's previous albums. It is the point at which Cave's second creative period is generally thought to begin. After the release of Henry's Dream Cave moved back to London, and since then he has lived in the UK, latterly in Brighton.

In 1994 the Bad Seeds released their most commercially successful album up until then, Let Love In. It includes another song that Cave is often identified with, Red Right Hand, a horror movie soundtrack favorite. However, it was the 1996 release Murder Ballads and the duets with PJ Harvey and Kylie Minogue (the latter collaboration, Where the Wild Roses Grow, was a mainstream hit, winning three ARIA Awards including "Song of the Year") that made Cave a somewhat famous "rock poet".

1997 saw the release of Cave's most personal album until then (perhaps to date too), The Boatman's Call. Its release can perhaps be seen as the move to Cave's third creative period - the stories of violence and murder on the incoherent and slightly humorous Murder Ballads were abandoned on The Boatman's Call which was the first album released by the newly peaceful acoustic Cave. After the album's release, Cave took time out to rehabilitate from his heavy heroin and alcohol habits. His comeback after the four-year hiatus was No More Shall We Part, a much more power-packed album in the same vein as Henry's Dream.

In 2003 Nocturama was released. Many fans of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds consider it the band's only lackluster album, and while it was commercially quite popular, it received quite a trashing from many critics and fans. The band quickly returned to form with the double album Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus the following year, though now without Blixa Bargeld who left the band in 2003.
