Label/Format: CBS – with matt quite smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive with moderate spindle marks, but mostly quite fine and light. The record plays very well indeed and was a joy to hear in stereo.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Although not a very first pressing, this album is becoming increasingly scarce and sort-after.

Musicians: Jim McGuinn – lead guitar, vocals; David Crosby – guitar, vocals; Chris Hillman – electric bass, vocals; Michael Clarke – drums. Gene Clark – tambourine, harmonica, vocals.

Brief Info: One of the earliest albums that branched into true psychedelic rock, it was the band’s third album and my personal favourite. Largely made after the departure of Gene Clark and now with a different sound from their trademark folk-rock. It features one of psych’s most loved tracks, the sublime ‘Eight Miles High’ with it’s intricate twisted guitar riff that sounds amazing on this stereo record that of course utilises two channel separation to maximum effect. With four covers and (unusually) none by Dylan, there is not a bad moment on this wonderful album. The still early stereo copy is very nice and plays superbly, it was joy to play-grade. And, given the cover was not laminated, it also remains in very impressive condition as-seen.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better stil given to just how prone to wear this is. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Shorewood Packaging Co Ltd. Includes with the promotional CBS, circa 1969-70 inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A beautiful and famous psychedelic front cover graphic, and here seen to very high advantage on a very dark surface that has minimal traces of wear. Any rim impression gentle and light with hardly any trace of ink loss or erosion. The lack of ugly deep penetrating ring wear or creasing is superb news, any blemishes tiny and light and no sticker issues. Unforgiving and seldom seen much better, this matt surface will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: The smooth back has also fared well – this cover has been protected many years inside a clear cover, hence the surfaces lack the usual wear most will have. Minimal discolouration or creasing, any marks light from the thick record, a gentle rub near top from its rim so difficult to avoid totally. Both main faces only give scant hint of their considerable age and remain attractive.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both straight with light patchy rubbing to the black surfaces.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still sharp with any hint thickening very gentle and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. The text mostly intact with any letter clipping tiny, little and light as-seen. Any discolour to the white surface also light with just the odd tiny mark or blemish.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light again, the odd tiny dink trace, but very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: An impressive all-round example of this very revealing original cover, one that will prove difficult to find better. With only scant hint of age, this famous vintage sleeve should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): an unlined CBS promotional inner that has aged a little with some general discolouration and edge-area creasing which is quite mild. A couple of small neat edge splits repaired by myself to stop them widening in future, they hardly even register.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: or thereabouts. A fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and heavily pressed on robust top-quality vinyl. A copy with very fine, mostly wispy surface marks seen more critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light little register. Visually a fine looking record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant psych-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and has been generally well stored and handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
