Brief Info: The first Byrds album and one that bought a new unique sound to popular music. They skillfully blended folk-rock which soon included elements of psychedelia. It includes four classic covers by Bob Dylan as well as original material. It proved popular and sold quite well. This a superb original UK mono copy that plays beautifully with a very attractive cover. Such examples are never easy to find with the majority in scruffy, scratched and often unplayable condition. Mono records of this great age of things of beauty when seen and heard as such.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back on three flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes the 075 date-coded inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: An attractive front with the laminate retaining excellent shine, fine freshness and clarity with no lifting, any dulling light seen under light. Any marks or creases quite few and light. The graphic of the band looks fantastic as-seen. A front that defies its vast age.

Cover Back: The unprotected back gives only politely modest clues of age. Gentle discolouration with the odd small tone spot, but hardly any creasing or rubbing. The card has a mild and gentle wave. All three flipbacks are solid and have little to fault bar a crease on the bottom left. They remain clean with neat ends that have virtually avoided burring or grubbiness most seen to acquire over time. Overall a fine back.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both thin but still quite straight with nigh-on fully laminate retention, smooth and barely worn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, again quite straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate which remains clear and ultra smooth.

Corners: Small tip rubs on the right, fine to very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. With any actual wear or ageing modest and light, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: but actually looking way better, this grade is because one corner is angle-cut, which I doubt it wasn’t from new. That apart, it’s really nice for an inner date-coded 075 (July 1965). The paper has darkened and the top left corner has a crease. The two window circles are crisp and totally undamaged, the polylining intact and reasonably clear, all edges solidly intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / NEAR EXCELLENT: side one especially is very impressive, side two has a few light visible surface marks that do nothing. A very fine mono record that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any other surface marks few, light and faint as seen more critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches and the record plays with superb clean sound. Even with a few visible light surface marks and some very fine, more wispy ones, visually still an impressive record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly and, given the sheer number of years, has been generally well stored and handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. In terms of audio quality, this one will not be easy to find better.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
