Label/Format: CBS - original format with intense orange colour, fully textured and with the rare 33 speed indicator instead of thirty-three and a third. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in fantastic condition and practically as fresh and clean as made. Incredible rich colour with only very light and faint spindle marks, and very few of and no wear around the hole area. All evidence suggests a copy hardly played reitterated by pristine-perfect sound from beginning to end.

Cat Number: SBPG 62571.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Rare as a first pressing and even more so in stereo. Few in 1965 bought stereo records and most seen early examples are mono. This is a beautiful copy too with a lovely clean cover and a very lightly played record that sounds simply amazing. The few faint surface marks present have no sound at all and this blew me away totally. One of the earliest available and it will take an incredible copy to better this.

Brief Info: An absolutely stunning debut album by this legendary American band. This was electric folk-rock of the highest quality and includes four Bob Dylan songs performed the way only The Byrds ever could. What an absolute joy hearing this ultimately early UK stereo pressing too. The sound is simply astonishing with vibrancy, polish and detail only the earliest, cleanest vinyl pressings will give. A record with just the odd few ultra fine hairline surface marks but NO sound whatsoever and both playing surfaces look fantastic. With wide, deep and complex groove patterns, this is the ultimate way to experience this legendary album. With a time-defying cover as well, this will thrill fans of the era and genre.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ and undergraded at that. Now nearly 44-years-old, few available examples will match or better this. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England with no printer’s credits (like the early Dylans). This has it’s original huge stereo sticker on the back which is also in superb condition.

Lamination & Front: The laminate is fresh and attractive with very nice shine and clarity. All bar two tiny, almost minuscule lifts on the spine edge (look very hard indeed…), is full adhered and any creases are just a tiny few on the spine edge which is great news on such a dark cover. The famous ‘fish-eye’ lens artwork looks fantastic and the black surrounding area still very black indeed. Under angled light, there are faint traces of friction rubs with minor dulling but normal viewing reveals nothing. Any record rim marks are ultra fine and faint and this front sets a very high standard, and remember, its an original, few will survive much better.

Cover Back: The back is in sensational condition with any marks or blemishes being minuscule and faint. With ultra critical viewing under light, a small faint clear ‘dull’ can be seen just above the bottom flipback near centre. This is the only blemish on the entire back and only just worthy of mention. Almost certain a faint glue smear from the flipback adhesive. When holding and viewing normally, this will remind of a almost new cover back and please remember the age and the fact it has no laminate protection. Beautifully preserved and looking terrific to the eye, this has barely aged at all and is devoid of creasing, rubbing or grubbiness. The white still being white with no toning or yellowing. No ringwear or record impression and the stereo sticker looks fantastic too. Just slight darkening round its edges. Never removed or picked at, this huge original stereo sticker is in supreme condition. Clearly CBS did not waste money producing a dedicated stereo cover in the ‘mono age’, instead stereo stickers were applied to differentiate between the two formats. The flipbacks are immaculate and have even practically avoided any fine surface creases. All firmly adhered and ultra clean and shiny, the ends have no grubbiness or grime-line formation and no end burring. This back sets the standard and will prove close to impossible to find better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Mint as made: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square. Ultra clear and even this has rich shine and clarity. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: A tiny laminate chip on the bottom right front, that apart, all others look practically as made. All retain superb shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A beautiful original example of this rare ‘stereo’ mid-60’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner: This one came in a plain white polylined inner. It is UK patented but has Foreign patents pending text. It’s around EX and slightly age toned near the edges with a few tiny tone spots. Solid with no edge splits and the lining very solid and clear, the window rims being pristine. Few creases and looking just right for its considerable age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Critically graded EX++ and like the cover difficult not to grade Mint(-). A tiny few ultra fine and faint hairlines off being sensational. These minor visual blemishes, only seen under angled light have no sound or audio effect whatsoever. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and these two playing surfaces on a first pressed example will prove immensely difficult to ever find better. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault whatsoever. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is stunning with a wide dynamic range and very detailed stereo sound. Beautifully produced and mixed with lovely separation and naturalness. The absolute definitive way to hear this legendary debut in real stereo. Surface sounds? what surface sounds? barely anything registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will get close to the performance of this original stereo pressing I am certain. Just imagine the use and abuse this could potentially have suffered (like most would have). I am certain this record has not seen light-of-day for decades. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Another classic that will be long remembered after it’s gone. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
