Description

Collectors of motion-picture soundtracks know that the original LP of Max Steiner's score to the 1954 classic THE CAINE MUTINY is The Holy Grail of film soundtracks.  Because the entire second side of the LP is taken up by the actual soundtrack of the pivotal court-martial sequence, author Herman Wouk - who never gave permission for his words to be released on vinyl - demanded that Columbia Pictures withdraw the LP, which they did.  Consequently, very few truly original 1954 copies made their way into the marketplace, and original, vintage copies sell for thousands of dollars (if you can find one). The soundtrack has never been reissued on CD.

This is an exact copy of the original 1954 soundtrack, RCA Victor LOC-1013, complete with full color album cover, full liner notes on the back, and the green label.  It was privately issued for collectors in the early '90s, and only 1000 copies were struck.  It is in MINT condition.

The standard-sized 12-1/4" x 12-1/4" cover features color artwork portraits of Humphrey Bogart, Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson and Fred MacMurray against a tempestuous, blue-gray sea, with the title in yellow letters.  The back cover contains detailed liner notes about the story, the film, and the dramatic significance of each track.  Side A is comprised of Max Steiner's dramatic score.  Side B is the courtroom sequence.

The family of a longtime collector (now deceased) has put his collection up for auction, on consignment.  In addition to being a film, theatre, and music fan, he became personal friends with the likes of Igor Stravinsky, Thomas Mann, and Alma Mahler. He truly led a remarkable life and, in his many decades of collecting, amassed a jaw-dropping collection of autographs, records, books and photos.

Please note that there is No Reserve on this particular item, although the starting bid should be thought of as a "jumping off" point, rather than a reflection of the full value of this rare and collectible album.

The condition is MINT.  The cover is unfaded, unpunched, with no ring or edge wear. The record itself has never been played.  These were never shrink-wrapped to begin with, but I've put this album in a new, acid-free plastic record sleeve to protect it.

Please note: There are no darkened areas on the cover; that's my scanner's doing.

Once again, just to be clear:  This is not an actual, fifty-six-year-old original album.  (That would be worth thousands of dollars.)  This is an exact duplicate, privately issued for collectors in an unnumbered edition of 1000 in the early '90s.

If for some reason (other than simple buyer's remorse, of course), you decide that this piece is not "as advertised," you may return it within two weeks for a full refund (minus shipping).
