This album features their classic five member line-up of, Michael Karoli (Guitars), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Jaki Leipzeit (Drums, percussion), Holgar Czukay (Bass) and the legendary vocalist, Kenji ‘Damo’ Suzuki.
The four instrumentalists were all unique and having a style all of their own. Schmidt, a classically trained keyboard player, had a karate chopping style which was famous, Czukay’s bass lines had a throbbing wobbly sound, and the strings really twang, Leipzeit’s percussion was almost metronomic at times and is without doubt one of the finest and most influential drummers ever and the late, great Michael Karoli’s guitar had a splintering sound that complemented the Can sound perfectly. That leaves Damo: not so much a singer but a vocalist who almost just breathes down the mike - inventive, abstract and sometimes scary - at times he just goes completely off the rails bursting into free-form improvisation. The same can be said of Can in general really. Live they were never the same and their early 70s gigs are legendary. This, their fourth album is truly amazing and for many fans, their very best. Following on from the masterpiece Tago Mago, this takes rock music to new levels of excellence. A mix of some shorter songs, almost catchy at times, Ege Bamyasi (so named after a can of Turkish Okra) includes the delicate ‘Sing Swan Song’ where Damos vocals can almost be understood. To the other extreme, ‘Soup’ is weird with Demo going ‘crazy’ with a barrage of vocal improvisation over a backdrop of manic keyboards - this track breaks into the avant garde and is totally compelling.
This legendary band’s albums are fast becoming extinct now and finding even tatty copies is becoming harder, especially the Suzuki era albums. The cover is in reasonable condition considering age. The vinyl has some superficial marks but these do not affect play. The record has never been cleaned with any chemicals or abrasive materials.
