Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Rarity: This album was originally made as a private pressing in Germany and is one of the rarest classic rock albums ever made. First UK ‘commercial’ pressings were issued on the orange and burgundy label format in tiny numbers for the briefest time. Most copies are found on this more familiar cream and brown UA label, but even these are far from common with only a few more daring music fans willing to buy a new experimental German band’s first album.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably the definitive and most important of the German progressive bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Known affectionally as ‘Krautrock’ these types broke new barriers in rock music. Can took this art to new levels of creativity, spawning a host of immitators – few came close. Featuring the band’s original vocalist Malcolm Moony, a black American who gave his all. The four instrumentalists were all unique and having a style all of their own. Schmidt’s karate chopping keyboard style was unusual, Czukay’s basslines had a fantastic twanging sound and rarely sounded better than on this album. Leipzeit’s percussion metronomic and was without doubt one of the finest and most influential drummers ever, and Michael Karoli’s guitar had a splintering sound that complemented the band’s music perfectly. Mooney, later replaced by the legendary Damo Suzuki, was a fine inventive vocalist who sung with great passion and intensity. With pulsating rhythms and extremes of style this is an exciting experience. Can were the leading pioneers of this hugely creative genre. Not music for the casual listener, this had only limited sales, especially at the beginning. This trip into the mind-bending world of Krautrock will appeal to all fans of this legendary band. This record, their recognised debut album is truly amazing, it takes rock music to new levels of brilliance and refuses to age. A mix of three shorter songs on side one, and the stunning ‘Yoo Doo Right’ that was recorded live over a long period and edited down to occupy all of side two. The album is brilliantly produced as well and sounds great turned up high. This copy on offer appears little used and plays impressively, it is one of the earliest pressings on the cream label and includes a fine looking cover which is always very prone to heavy ugly wear on the back.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. Printed and made in England by The Upton Printing Group, includes the paler ochre UA inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: This has a very nice looking front that would grader nearer excellent plus on its own. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and minimal light creasing. Mild dulling near the top and bottom from the record rim, but little else. The famous graphic retaining deep unfaded colour and attractiveness.

Cover Back: The uncompromising back has only light edge rubbing with a very fine rim arc rub near the left. Light handling traces only and minimal creasing again, overall this has fared well for a surface that seldom does.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both quite straight, smooth and hardly worn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any thickening to the back edge only very light with hardly any to the front. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, fairly straight with some quite mild compression towards the top as-seen. The text is unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, very fine to near excellent shape retained with no heavy knocks. The odd small tip crease only.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the pale ochre unlined UA inner sleeve has aged little with any discolouration or toning little, gentle and light. Minimal creasing with all edges naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with few plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, and maybe even most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Krautrock classic album – one of the very finest within this genre – plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early (1 R / 1 G) cream label pressing I feel sure. This exactly the same record as the burgundy label version only with a new label applied (that confirmed by the ultimate second and first stampers). Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been quite well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
