The Catherine Wheel : Wishville A-1 / B-1 1st Press Limited Edition No 0792

This first pressing plays with superb audio for the vast majority.  There is some static here and there but this mainly restricted to S1.  S2 begins with some static and then plays with stunning quality for the remainder.  A full audio grading is given below and as always I have listened to every track in full.  I have heard that this limited edition often plays with static but overall it isn't that intrusive and a large part of S1 still plays with exceptional quality.  The audio is very strong and deep throughout.

The cover is in great condition with very little wear - just a small punch hole in the bottom left corner.  The lyric inner also has one but is otherwise in superb shape.

This limited edition pressing has an A1 / B1 matrix and has the number 0792 on the back.

The audio on S1 is Near Mint- (T1 VG+ in a couple of sections / T3 Ex+ / T4 Mint- / T5 VG+)

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a strong glossy sheen and no actual scratches.  Under a bright light there are some faint hairlines as is to be expected but there is no groove wear or 'clouding' of the surface.  The labels are as close to perfect as is possible with only one faint trace on S1.

Play grading  

The intro on 'Sparks Are Gonna Fly' plays very clearly with only very minimal static and the opening vocal is close to perfect with only a little background.  As the volume increases the audio is so strong and deep and from then on plays very well with only minimal intrusion.  There are a handful of light ticks plus one click but overall it plays with great depth and power and the second half in particular is superb.  I would say it ranges between VG+ and Near Mint-

'Gasoline' plays with real depth and has only a little background static here and there which is in no way intrusive.  A great track and Near Mint- is deserved.

The intro and opening vocal on 'Lifeline' play very clearly with intermittent light static only and as it 'kicks into gear' the playback is superb.  The next quieter section has only minimal static and from then on plays to a very high standard.  Yes some static during the final quiet vocal but the remainder plays perfectly.  Ex+

'What We Want To Believe In' plays with stunning clarity and power from start to finish with no interference.  No background here apart from static on the fade out.  Mint-

'All Of That' has no clicks or pops but does play with some static throughout which is a little more obvious at the beginning.  It certainly decreases as it progresses.  I believe VG+ is about right.

The quiet intro and first three lines on 'Idle Life' play with static and then the first 'verse' is close to perfect with barely any background.  The chorus is 'as new' and from then it plays with outstanding clarity and depth and barely any static.  It plays beautifully so I will grade the opening section as VG and the rest as Mint-

The intro on 'Mad Dog' plays with sublime clarity and the first verse and chorus also play perfectly.  It continues in the same precise way with a sonic quality that cannot be faulted in any way.  A STUNNING version and Mint- in every way.

'Ballad Of A Running Man' plays with stunning precision throughout.  Exceptional power and depth and no background apart from a couple of minor ticks on the fade out.  Mint-

The intro on 'Creme Caramel' plays with great clarity and the opening vocal is just as strong.  It continues to play with tremendous power and depth with no sign of any interference.  There is no inner groove distortion and every vocal and instrumental section plays with superb audio and that includes the quiet end section.  A Mint- conclusion for sure.

In summary this first pressing plays to a very high standard with only some static here and there which by and large is not intrusive.  A little more obvious in a couple of sections which is described above.  However, the majority does play with great quality and S2 in particular is stunning!  It's just the opening section that has a little interference.  What you do notice is how strong and deep the audio is on both sides and I am sure the vinyl has not been played very much.  I would say the static is down to the vinyl pressing 'techniques' at the time!  Overall though a great listen.

The Cover & Lyric Inner

The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and has retained its original shape perfectly.  The only 'obvious' wear is a small punch hole in the lower left corner like you often find with import copies.  The top edge is perfect and the bottom edge has only very minimal rubbing.  The spine is also in superb shape and all of the corners are so clean with barely any wear.  The opening edge has no handling wear either.  The front cover has just one very small white 'line' near the bottom edge and the back cover is very clean also with just one 'speck' and the punch hole of course.  As can be seen it has the limited edition number 0792 in the top right corner.

The lyric inner is in great condition with no marking or creasing and again has a small punch hole through one corner.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
