This US 20 Feb 1958 release was an opportunity to get copies of the Crickets’ third American single plus two excellent album tracks on one convenient EP release. All 4 songs were arranged by Buddy and recorded by Norman Petty. Those who have been to his studio in Clovis will know that Norman was meticulous about the quality of American releases of his recordings and insisted that all first pressings were sent to him by the record company for vetting. Thus Buddy and his band never sounded better than they do on this EP. This 7 inch 45 RPM EP record is the first US pressing. The UK equivalent was Coral FEP 2003, which has a dull sound in comparison with this US pressing. The latter was made using Norman Petty’s original session tapes rather than the exported 2nd or 3rd generation copies that were supplied to foreign markets including the UK. The listening experience is wonderfully clear compared with anything issued since. Buddy Holly is on vocals/lead guitar and supported by Joe Mauldin [double bass], Jerry Allison [drums] and Nikki Sullivan. This EP did not sell particularly well in the US at first so comparatively few copies were made until the early ‘60s. By then, the original stampers had been replaced. So this 1st pressing is arguably the most collectable of Buddy Holly’s US-issued EPs and a highly sought after collector’s item compared with the other 2 US EPs issued and featuring Buddy during his lifetime. It is complimented by the original sleeve with a 2-layer paper/cardboard construction used by Brunswick Records in the mid 1950s. It is rare to find such an EP in fine condition right here in the UK.
