You are bidding on a copy of The Cure's 1984 album entitled 'The Top', signed by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper and Roger O'Donnell.
Released on 30 April, 1984, 'The Top' was the fifth studio album by The Cure, peaking at #10 on the UK Album Chart. It received mainly positive press reaction, with Steve Sutherland in the Melody Maker praising the album for its "psychedelia that can't be dated" and Andy Strike in the Record Mirror calling it "a record of wicked originality and wit". Barron at Sounds, while expressing certain reservations, nevertheless prophesized " In 20 years time, when the next generation blushes with excitement about the word psychedelic, it'll be regarded as a classic ".
Chris Turner of AllMusic noted that while it is "an album obviously recorded under stress, drink and drugs, Smith's ability" to fuse the paranoia and neurosis of former work with his newfound use of pop melody and outside influences" makes the record " a necessary step in the evolution of the band".
The album was re-released on 8 August, 2006 in the US and 14 August, 2006 in the UK, with an additional disc containing 4 previously unreleased tracks, 3 live performances and studio out takes/demo's of 9 of the 10 songs on the original album.
The Cure are an English rock band formed in Crawley in 1976. The band have experienced several line-up changes, with vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Robert Smith being the only constant member.
They first began releasing material in the late 1970's, with their debut album 'Three Imaginary Boys' (1979), along with several early singles, placing the band as part of the post-punk and new wave movements which had sprung upun the wake of the punk rock revolution in the UK. During the early 1980's, the band's increasingly dark and tormented music, as well as Smith's stage appearance, was a staple of the emerging style of music known as gothic rock.
The band are estimated to have sold approximately 27million records as of 2004 and have released 13 studio albums, 10 EP's and over 30 singles to date.
They are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
