THE DIAMONDS The Stroll/Land of Beauty 45rpm Vinyl Single Mercury Records 1957
One of the leading cover groups of the mid-'50s, the Diamonds adapted current R&B hits into pop gold of their own. Hailing from Toronto, the Canadian quartet (consisting of Ted Kowalski, Phil Leavitt, Bill Reed and Dave Smerville) signed with Mercury in 1955 and immediately zoomed up pop play lists with covers of the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"; the Willows' "Church Bells May Ring"; and their biggest hit of all, a sanitised version of the Gladiolas hit "Little Darlin'." Fronted by David Somerville, the quartet hit with an original, the smooth dance outing "The Stroll." After weathering major personnel changes, the Diamonds notched their last hit in 1961. Somerville remained active as a solo artist for a time, and the Diamonds often toured the oldies scene. I have graded the vinyl Very Good Plus, as there are light surface marks consistent with light use and wear and a record being brought out of its sleeve over time (1957).  But playback is clear, excellent, this a really good recording in my opinion.  The vinyl has not lost its sheen.

There is a new inner sleeve with a soft protective lining, as well as a thicker outer cover and a photographic front piece, which is not an original cover but serves to identify a record housed in a collection. Unfortunately the paper sleeves were flimsy and harsh back in the day and hence the vinyl collected many surface marks, but nothing that interferes with playback.
