Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Any of the few spindle marks are fine, light and faint and this record appears very lightly played.

Cat Number: EKS 74007.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity & Detail: Scarce: and actually I consider this second pressing rarer than the original on the orange label. The red labels not available that long before the Butterfly format replaced it along with the new K- prefixes replacing the EKS catalogue numbers. I think these pressings were actually cleaner and more reliable too and this album offers close to perfect sound with ultimate detail and clarity. Also for good measure, this pressing from around 1960-70 had a fully laminated cover. So many of the originals had imported American matt covers that invariably wore badly and never offering that splendid depty of colour the laminated versions had. Yes, some originals did have a laminated cover as well, but are quite scarce and they often suffered lifting, creasing and dulling.

Brief Info: From my early teenage years when I first heard The Doors, this album and band totally blew me away and even today I regard this album as one of my favourites ever. A groundbreaking album that introduced the world to James Douglas Morrison, one of the most iconic and greatest vocalists ever. A man who tragically died far too young, who knows what other wonderful albums the band and he could have made given the chance? I love all seven of the official Morrison Doors albums but this debut is extra special and musically still sounds as powerful and fresh as it did back in the 1960s. Most rock fans will know this album well already but special mention must be made for the incredible finale: ‘The End’ is still one of the most haunting and powerful tracks ever written. Building slowly with real eeriness and atmosphere, this is Morrison at his very best. The climax into madness at the end is as powerful as anything that has ever been put to vinyl – Jim explodes into frenzy before then mellowing down again to the gentle ending. This monumental epic was used to brilliant effect on the Francis Ford Coppola movie ‘Apocalpse Now’ back in 1979 and bought this song and band even more the public’s attention. This second red label UK issue is superbly pressed and avoided any heavy tracking abuse so many of the originals had to ensure. Great detail, dynamics, and stand-out basslines that seem more muted on the later K- pressings or formats. These have the correct sound, the correct production, the correct mix. It has a couple of faint ticks from a tiny mark – blink and you will miss them – but little else. I had to get out the magnifier to even see the tiny culprit, the only minor blemish on a nigh-on immaculate record. It offers fantastic sound with depth and dynamics, the sonic delivery of the songs is unbeatable that other formats cannot match. Little played and a real delight, all the sound focused and precise – few originals ever will be these days, the advantage of a slightly later pressing where record players were a little more refined. Regarded more as an underground act with so many American bands ignored or not known at this time, few of these would have sold initially, especially in stereo. If quality sound – and this one does it practically full justice – is paramount, enjoy this evergreen classic via this very impressive, very lightly used set.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being quite conservative too. A single fully laminated format. Manufactured in Great Britain by Polydor Records.

Lamination – Front & Back: Even though fully laminated, these were not exempt from issues. Many originals suffered often severe lifting, creasing from bad adhesion in manufacture and dulling. I am glad to say this one had little to fault bar small right corner tip chips. Both sides retain a fine shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and barely any creasing at all. Any dulling seen under angled light is very mild and faint as are any minor surface marks or blemishes. Simply compare this to the ring worn and badly rubbed American originals – they barely even compare – and few will better this impressive cover significantly.

Top Edge: Straight, unscuffed with laminate protection on the fold. Just a small tip rub on the right.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, largely sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression very slight indeed. Barely any real wear, fully laminated with just a small hint of natural surface crinkle here and there, all the text is unworn and perfect. Try finding that on the US version.

Corners: The left pair are superb and little short of as made. The right pair have tip rubs as can be seen on my front picture. Very fine (right) to near perfect (left pair) shape is retained.

Cover Summary: Quite possibly the best EKS prefix ‘original’ cover I have yet had. The lack of dulling, creasing and lifting all make for a hugely attractive example. These are seldom found quite this nice and I feel sure most collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner that has aged little. The record was in a replacement lined inner sleeve thus this has survived well. Any creasing minor and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): two very clean playing surfaces with a lovely shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks are very few, fine and faint and I am sure this quality pressed record has been played little. As mentioned further up, a tiny little mark emits a couple of faint ticks, but that is pretty much all I heard on this splendid record – blink and you miss them – hardly bad for a record now into it’s 43rd year. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This legendary masterpiece mostly plays up to, and most all above it’s impressive visual condition. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Personally, I prefer the stereo mix of this album, the separation of the music is impressive and adds to the real affect of the songs. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or other clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. That never to be taken for granted – I have heard several very noisy originals. An album quite intolerant of heavy tracking and often Manzarek’s keyboards clip and break up. The clarity and focus of all the vocals and instruments are all fully intact on this record and the music just flows. For those familiar, most will know ‘The End’ is a very challenging 11+ minutes worth. Highs and lows in volume, so many get scratched and distort. Being the innermost song, it is so vulnerable to the tracking angle and arm lifting, this copy has remained totally unscathed. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended..

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
