Label/Format: Elektra – original red format with matt finish and a gentle hint of texturing, this being one of the earliest ever pressings as confirmed by the matrixes (see further down) and the date code on it’s original inner sleeve (seen on my close up picture). Another superb record from the same source as the other items I have been, and still am offering. The one-owner was worked in a vinyl pressing factory and was able to get some of the earliest-made copies available.

Label Conditions: Both in age-defying conditions: fresh, clean and attractive. Side one has two or three very fine and faint traces, side two just the one longer mark with very little visibility with normal viewing.

Cat Number: EKS 75007.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Original UK originals are fast becoming rare. Finding ones hardly played harder still, they seldom surface like this. Indeed this barely used record could prove the ultimate upgrade for many, the early matrixes and stampers below show this is one of the earliest ever made.

Brief Info: This was The Doors fifth album and one of the very best within their supreme Morrison-era catalogue. After the mixed reviews for ‘The Soft Parade’, which did not please all fans (personally, I loved it), this saw the band switch to more bluesy material and includes some stunning tracks. The critics of the day again raved about The Doors, some citing it as their best album, some went further still rating it album of the decade and masterful return to form. It proved to date to be their best-selling album in the UK as well. Now with a gritty, heavier sound, and again with a strong production Morrison was back in commanding form. This also includes some truly memorable quieter tracks and certainly one of my favourites ever in ‘Indian Summer’, a song probably less known than many to non-Doors fans, but this slow sensitive track exudes sheer beauty with Jim as tender as he ever got. This solidly pressed and beautifully preserved first issue offers reference standard audiophile sound and will thrill fans of the ‘Lizard King’. The new sound worked magnificently and is a wonderful prelude to the stunning ‘LA Woman’ that brought bought the original Doors career to a breathtaking climax – sadly it was to be Morrison’s classic swansong.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a very conservative grading for a cover that actually looks better. Also this is one that simply does not wear well and seldom seen anything like this nice. An unlaminated gatefold format with smooth matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill and, of course has the original EKS prefix and 75007 number. Beware of later Kinney substitutions that look virtually the same. This includes the original date-coded 1/0370 (1st March 1970), that within the first couple or three weeks of issue.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: Possible small improving of the spine top corner – anything I suspect or uncertain of, I will mention.

Cover Front: At last a lovely example of this difficult cover with all the main large surfaces looking impressive. So often this is ruined by large sticker tears for which this surface offers no resistance, here are are none. Clean, fresh and attractive with barely any creasing. Gentle dulling seen near the right edge shows very little with normal full-on viewing and any marks even finer still. The famous photograph taken in secret at the real Morrison Hotel in Los Angeles after being refused permission to do so. It has become an iconic photograph within The Doors album catalogue, here it will seldom be seen better.

Cover Back: Similar again with only fairly fine dulling around the thick record’s rim. This more often seen with heavy penetrating, sometimes full circle ringwear which again has been avoided. A little very fine traces of edge rubbing top and bottom, but like the front, clean, fresh with hardly any creasing. Both front and back have survived the years well and giving only gentle clues to it’s genuine 44-years-of-age.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically Mint as made – beautiful deep colour and vibrancy – any blemishes minuscule. Another classic group picture as seen in close-up.

Top Edges: Light patchy rubbing, mainly to the back. The inside end panel to the front, on the right, has gently thickened, this always hard to avoid when slightly raised to the main fold.

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing on the back, the front has little. All these edges are still very straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear at all and both guranteed untrimmed. Any thickening or burring only small and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, minimal compression and folded very square and all the edges meet up flush and parallel which makes quite a difference to attractiveness. All text is perfect and unworn which is a big bonus on these type of covers. A small rub to the bottom corner and the very top. Possible small enhancement of the top, or it has gently rubbed or faded? The delicate folds are largly unworn with practically all ink intact and neat, sadly, not always the case on these.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with mostly fine and some with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this deceptively wear-prone and unforgiving first-made 1970 cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. I have seen some pretty poor examples of this cover before, many damaged, torn or heavily ringworn to put an attractive one like this into real perspective. This considerably above average original Doors cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): just a fairly light darkening on the seams as the adhesive browns over time – few avoid this totally. That apart, a superb Polydor-style inner with pristine window circles and ultra clear, only slightly crinkled polylining. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. On the face-of-it, a fairly ordinary, but fine condition Polydor inner sleeve, but not so. That important 1/0370 date-code (seen in close-up) confirms this as one of the earliest copies made from 1st March 1970.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and only a whisker of a top Mint(–) grade that I will rarely even contemplate (even if justified) on a hardly played 44-year-old record. A hugely impressive clean visual copy that retains impressive shine, freshness and very solidly pressed. Any surface trace marks are few, very fine and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually a superb record that should please most-all collectors, they hardly get better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautifully preserved and barely played record plays up to it’s high visual grading and beyond with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is of studio quality with the precision and detail of the mastertape – a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and few original Morrison Hotel’s will survive like this. Even the quieter songs gave of their very best and this is a genuine first issue that will never need upgrading. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this one, a record barely run-in in vinyl terms, my mandatory play-grade quite possibly only it’s second. Both channels are clean and sharp, generally well stored and the record itself, carefully handled, I doubt if it has seen light-of-day for decades. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, even offering this one is proving difficult. This copy, the record especially, will prove immensely difficult to find better as an EKS original and merits my highest possible recommendation – do NOT lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
