Compilations can sometimes be contentious ideas, particularly if collecting songs together from bands whose albums were a journey, not just a collection of songs. Such a band would be The Doors, the song order being in my opinion a major contributing factor to the experience of their early albums. So it is very cool that seemingly someone who cares about this stuff has tried very hard to preserve that whole song-to-song journey experience when compiling this. This compilation therefore has the feel of an album, leading off with "Break on Through (To the Other Side)" until final track "The End", that mystical poetic feel of The Doors and Morrisson's manic delivery is nicely retained. Placing "When the Music's Over" at the end of disc one makes for the perfect intermission. A fantastic compilation that will be just right for those yet to fully grasp what The Doors is about.

What we have here is a mega-rare audiophile vinyl pressing of this album , which was pressed on hi-grade virgin vinyl  FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES ONLY and was never offered retail. This album captures Doors in their classic hit (and some non-hit) performances, from 'Light my Fire' down to 'Riders on the storm' and includes songs from each and every phase of their career. To these ears, this is the best-sounding Doors’ recording in existence. Elektra/Asylum decided not to issue this album on audiophile vinyl commercially and it is safe to assume that we will never again see this album in this majestic format. Don't miss a chance to hold this piece of Doors’ history, in it's hardest-to-find format

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

Ideally, one would avoid compilations of the Doors' work, except perhaps for the hit singles and moments when one wanted very light listening. This was a band that took itself very seriously, almost to the point of self-parody at times, and their music ought to be discovered in the setting and context in which it was intended, but assuming that one needs a Doors anthology, this 18-track collection (19 on CD) is the place to start. It started life during the quadrophonic era as a single LP of the same title, with programming intended to combine the concepts behind two earlier compilations, 13 and Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine, under one cover. In 1985, this two-LP version, the fourth compilation of the group's work, and the most comprehensive, was released, providing a good overview to the most obvious different sides of the group's output.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The records come in their original stock inner sleeves.

(c)           The records are pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)          The records are pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.

(e)           White Label Promo-only Quiex II Audiophile version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(f)            Stock (commercially released) audiophile copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-        Cover has a sticker residue (partially peeled remnants of the price sticker or some other sticker; the buyer can probably remove these small, still affixed bits and pieces of the sticker with a minor effort)

-        Cover has a  peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker  (less than 2 square inch in size).

-        Cover has a small cutout saw-mark (an indent about 3-5 mm long ) on one of its seams.

-        Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-        Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams (nothing significant)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-        The cover has visible scratch marks on the back panel.

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-        Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
