Label/Format: Elektra – orange and black format with matt finish. These have the ‘Polydor Records’ credits on the 6 o’clock position as seen. Side one is smooth, side two is a partial texture – that is to say, the centre area inside the ring ridge, the outer rim area is smooth.

Label Conditions: Both superb, very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few very fine and light spindle marks on side two, hardly any at all on one. This is a very nice early example, a few light surface marks on the playing surfaces, but sound quality is absolutely fantastic throughout. An album I have always found hard to find with top sound, but this one really is immense.

Cat Number: EKS 74024.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good weight for any record.

Rarity: Very scarce: I have always found this the hardest Doors album to find. Even harder with a fine cover and top audio quality – well this delivers on both accounts and was a true pleasure to play-grade.

Brief Info: The Doors are one of my favourite bands of all-time and I will rarely even consider offering any of their albums that fail to please me. I have always found this a difficult album as a first pressing, often let-down by indifferent pressing quality and unwanted sounds. This has NO such issues and was a joy. This was The Door’s third album and last available in both mono and stereo formats. Another brilliant album, now with more variation, and in the US, one of their most popular as their reputation, especially live grew. Personally, I prefer the stereo pressing of this album, it images brilliantly, and the song ‘Spanish Caravan’ has jaw-drop fidelity and separation – from whatever source or format – I have never heard this sound better than from this vinyl record. Morrison’s expressive vocals are magnificent throughout, what a vocalist this man was, so sadly lost at far to young an age. Also this has a really fine cover. So often the inside is ruined by copious amounts of black inks as it rests upon white when closed, the left text side often blackened as the dark ink sets-off on the pale. This has practically none which is very unusual to say the least, but the difference is there to see. It’s these points that makes the difference between average and exceptional.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces This has the correct EKS Cat. No. It was printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day – later ones were by MacNeill et al. This has a Polydor style inner sleeve included, it has a 1968 date code and a date of ‘20 Jul 1968’ printed on the top right. If this is manufactured that way or not, I am really not sure – it looks hand stampted to me – that is just my opinion.

Cover Front: Impressively clean with little to fault. Any marks or blemishes are minimal and faint, this retains superb colour and even freshness. Any minor rubbing is contined to the corner tips and odd tiny trace on the edges here and there. Not seen a ‘Day’ cover for this album a great deal better and this sets a high standard.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just a couple of light tone spots traces near the bottom. The lack of creasing and especially ringwear is always a considerable bonus on this very prone cover.

Cover Centrefold: Never seen this centrefold look better: the right black lizard graphic is superb with no ringwear and practically devoid of handling marks, the intense blackness of the background is visually striking making the lizard look fantastic. The left white lyric side has barely any set-off at all (this where black rests upon white when closed). Few would have even considered putting a dividing sheet between to avoid this happening, but there is no other way this could have been avoided. I have seen just about enough of these covers to know this rarely avoids soiling on the pale left side. So to see this with barely any at all is highly unusual, and what a massive difference it makes visually.

Top Edges: Very fine, faint and minimal traces of patchy rubbing. Both straight and sit together flush and parallel.

Bottom Edges: Light to more moderate less patchy rubbing, thus my grading. Few non-laminate storage edges will avoid rubbing on these vulnerable areas.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Crisp and mostly very sharp with minimal traces of wear and both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Any thickening or burring tiny and little, even viewed end-on. Record enters on back edge.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine as well, again these are often seen badly rubbed or even threadbare. Any minor rubbing to this is largely confined to the very ends with little else, and that includes the folds. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so all the edges meet up closely and parallel. Slight tilt the left only, again that is hard to avoid over years of storage, but only minor. The text is nigh-on all fully present with any clipping or rub traces to the characters tiny, this also retains fine colour with any hint of fading again minimal.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with mostly very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Never an easy cover for several reasons, but this one looks very attractive indeed and finding a first Ernest J. Day original example much better will prove difficult – all the main faces are way above average, the inside fantastic. This should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): mainly marked down for age toning, this on the seam adhesive that will in most cases brown over time. A Polydor style polylined inner with a 1968 date-code. I am pretty sure the July 1968 date on the top right is a stamp, probably the retailer who sold it back in the day. I have indeed seen similar stamps before on inners in the past, but not lately. So this vintage inner has aged but is fully intact with two perfect crisp and undamaged window circles, quite clear lining, very little creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine very solidly pressed. I would suggest only modestly played, there are some fine surface marks or gentle paper scuffs – ALL totally superficial with NO sound at all. In fact this record plays beautifully throughout, any minor surface blemishes ignored, that is the crucial factor. As stated, any visual blemishes are mostly very fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually an impressive record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Doors record plays even above it’s fine visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. No pressing noises, and this stereo copy images perfectly. Again I have to mention ‘Spanish Caravan’ that opens side two, this sounds STUNNING. The detail, separation and sonic delivery of the guitars is simply incredible. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure, this is a really challenging record. The song ‘The Unknown Soldier’ particularly so, that is where I have heard sound issues on other copies, sometime with horrendous crackle and pressing rasps – NONE here at all. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
