Label/Format: Elektra – orange and black format with mat, smooth surfaces. These have the ‘Polydor Records’ credits on the 6 o’clock position as seen.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive with spindle marks being less than moderate, largely fine and light. Sound quality for this scarce original is impressively clean throughout with very little unwanted.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. Quite heavy for this album and label.

Rarity: Very scarce: I have always found this the hardest Doors album to find. Although the cover has some wear, the record is clean and plays impressively.

Brief Info: The Doors are one of my favourite bands of all-time and I will rarely even consider offering any of their albums that fail to please me for sound quality. I have always found this a difficult album as a first pressing, often let-down by indifferent pressing quality and unwanted sounds. This has NO such issues and was a pleasure to hear again from the vinyl source. This was The Door’s third album and last available in both mono and stereo formats. Another brilliant album, now with more variation, and in the US, one of their most popular as their reputation, especially live grew. Personally, I prefer the stereo pressing of this album, it images brilliantly, and the song ‘Spanish Caravan’ has jaw-drop fidelity and separation. Morrison’s expressive vocals are magnificent throughout, what a vocalist this man was, so sadly lost at far to young an age.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces This has the correct EKS Catalogue Number. Printed and made in England by Polydor. A basic plain white inner is included.

Cover Front: The front is impressive and grades nearer excellent. A trace of discolouration near the top, but hardly any rubbing or creasing, that unusual as this front is only single thickness card. One tiny mark has tip-in, but look hard to see it.

Cover Back: Very prone to wear, this has some general light surface rubbing. Also a small, very neat name near the top left corner. A gentle hint of waviness, this probably more felt than seen. A little wear on the spine fold, but clean and the lack of creasing a plus.

Cover Centrefold: The black lizard side is impressive with any marks few and faint with hardly any creasing. The left text side will clearly be affected by set-off from the black ink opposite when closed. But this has little, with most of any discolouration near the edges, the top with a little mild burring. So this side a little aged, but few will avoid being as such, overall a fine overall centre spread.

Top Edges: Both thin, but neat, flat and flush. A little thickening or burring so hard to avoid at best.

Bottom Edges: As above, with the fold being moderately rubbed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Crisp and mostly sharp with minimal traces of wear and both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Any thickening or burring minimal and light, even viewed end-on. Record enters on back edge.

Spine and Text: Mainly solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so all the edges meet up closely and parallel. Some rubbing to the folds, and a little fading to the surface, some text is lost due to this fact (for the sun), all else present.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained, no major knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: Never an easy cover for several reasons, but this one still looks quite attractive with less overall wear than many that surface. This should please many collectors, but as the grading suggests, not the more discerning or purists.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: a basic plain white unlined inner. Two neat untorn window circles with the edges largely intact. A very small tear on the top opening edge and overall, aged with the usual darkening.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): still a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine quite heavily pressed. Most of the surface marks are fine, light and faint, a couple of hairlines are seen more, but there are no penetrating stylus scratches. Sound quality is high, that being the most important factor bar none for me. So like the cover, not for visual purists, but if sound is the priority, this very early copy delivers.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Doors album plays above it’s very respectable visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, light and faint – very little for what is at times a challenging record with some very quiet passages. None more so than ‘The Unknown Solidier’ that is always the most difficult, especially so being the inner most song on side one. An excellent and clean pressing with no tracking issues* or invisible cutting noises. This stereo copy images perfectly. Again I have to mention ‘Spanish Caravan’ that opens side two, this sounds fantastic. The detail, separation and sonic delivery of the guitars is simply incredible. Even though there are surface marks, it will not be easy finding audio quality a great deal better. Nothing of any major note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
